That said, the Russian military still has a fair share of fanatical Soviets, so it really depends.
Old guard or new?

Thats the business lot......the military lot have been humiliated in various previous conflicts & now this...they don't like it.....
Well, if the war drags on much longer, there may not be any senior military people left. Lol

This is a must read.....obviously there will be other reports of the Russian TV interview...

Retired colonel speaks out on Russian TV - BBC News
That article asked the same question at the end that I was thinking the entire time.

Is this actually a moment of candor, or is this the Kremlin preparing the Russian people for the obvious bad news they're going to need to deliver. 20K+ sons aren't coming home. People notice.

No matter how big the propaganda machine (& Russia's isn't as big as China's) there is only so much you can hide from the general populous...especially then you have the relatives of 20,000+ dead soldiers to answer to.....even just 25% questioning the "truth" is too much to fully control.....as there are already those in the general population who knew from the beginning that the "special operation" was BS...

Rivers crossing have always been an issue for armies. It famously took Caesar 10 days to build a bridge across the Rhine (considered warp speed at that time) and it took 6 hours during operation plunder to do the same in WW2.

How long does it take a modern military to establish a river crossing on a river like that?

The Russians? Forever. For a real army it depends on so much stuff - from weather, to threat to the type of bridge they are building.

There is one huge difference between the west and the Russians. When we build a bridge, we consider safety (both for the builders and the "end user"), while Russians will just jerry rig (or jury rig depending on how you learned the phrase) something.

They would have lost a handful of tanks anyway in that crossing even if Ukraine wouldn't have targeted it.
