Square number plates in the UK???

Right so I've just got a gti conversion and smoothed in all the washer jets looks the part. But now I don't want to put the number plate back on as I've smoothed in all the parts that used to hold it. Is square plates legal in the uk?? I really don't know the law around it?:/ any help would be appreciated thanks.

Motor spares shops sell them, not knowing what they're going on so yea will be fine. Some taxis round by me even use them as they put the hackney plate right next to it so they have two square plates where the normal rectangle one would be. Perfectly legal or it wouldn't be sold. I even bought a bike one once (slightly smaller) never got pulled or questioned by police.

......and the bike one was on a car. Can't remember what it was on cos it was ages ago but I remember buying it cos it was the only size that would fit

Yeah there legal so long as its got standard lettering and spacing
