ROTA WHEELS?

rota's have had the tendence to break on the track while the person was racing, not during a wreck. well, im sure they break then also.

Friends dont let friends buy rotas.

Thats ridiculous :laughabove:

I dont think you realise how many Rota's ARE used on track, on cars that will give them a lot more stick than the average user ever will!!

Do you think you would give your wheels as much stick as these cars?

This car was THE fastest car in the UK 787bhp on Rota wheels, won the UK time attack series

How about this one? 1750kg 750bhp

And heres an xray of the wheels after half a season's racing on the GTR - no flaws

I believe this one is running near on 1300bhp

so you post pics of wheels that were in a WRECK and broke or can over something at 50mph. wow, imagine that. i believe any wheel would break.

So any wheel picture of a broken wheel is of one thats been involved in an accident

APART from the Rota's is that correct?

Not guaranteed, but there might be a group buy for Team Dynamics wheels going on in a few months...Regardless, they're superior wheels to Rotas, and are not considerably more expensive.

Team dynamics were the control wheel for the Mazda5 racing in the UK.

this year they have ditched Team Dynamics in order to use Rota.

I have a set with grippier tires on them that I run on my a3 in addition to the bbs wheels I run daily. I've used them on many cars over the years. I prefer a higher end forged wheel but these are perfectly viable choices and often times represent the best choice in a weight versus cost analysis. Hell the rota's I have are lighter than the bbs's I have now and they're both cast.....

I ran Rota Torque's on my EP3 Si. Hit moderate potholes and crap. I didn't have any problems at all. They are nice for the money.

My friend also has torques on his EP3, has auto-crossed with them on multiple occasions with sticky tires. Always running back road twisties and its a swapped car that makes decent power. Oh, he also lives in New Jersey where your hitting massive pot holes every 4 seconds. Rotas get so much shit, when in reality is they are a cast wheel that is mass produced, every cast wheel is cast the same, but when your dealing in high numbers there will always be a mishap somewhere. So far ive seen like 6 pictures put up of different rota wheels breaking. Im willing to bet that a majority of people running rotas post on forums and even if 20 people have snapped them, theres still a ton of people who have had 0 problems.

Seeing that as far as I know Rota make in excess of 300,000 per year, and have been going for 30 years.

If we half that, as they didnt do that many wheels to start with, thats still 150,000 x 30

Thats 4.5 million Rota wheels made.

All the broken wheel pictures I have seen of Rotas, when chased up to the original poster have a story behind them.

1. the circuit 8 that had snapped spokes had been used on track for 3 seasons THEN powdercoated, then the spokes broke on the next car, directly after powdercoating.

Please note that even rays engineering say replace wheels after every other season on track wheels, track wheels suffer fatigue

2. The Subzero that had twisted was used on a 500whp civic for 2 years, then he installed new brakes and had his wheels powdercoated, first time out the wheels hit the spoke and twisted the wheel.

3. The broken Group N shown on this thread, look at the picture, it really doesnt take a genius - snow, slid into kerb.

4. The broken Slipstream the owner posted that he hit a kerb!!

The morel of the story 5-6 wheels out of 4.5 million have broken upon impact.
The second morel of the story, is if you get wheels powdercoated ensure this is done at a LOW tempreture, with a lightweight heat treated alloy wheel, this is essential, otherwise you can effect the structure of the alloy FACT.

I personally have owned 2 sets of rota wheels and one set has warped on me. I am not saying this is a bad brand of wheel but I haven't had the best luck with this brand but had great customer service from Rota.

My story:

I was running a set of 18x8 48mm offset subzero with 225/40/18 tires for about a year and a half. The wheels had no track life on them and all DD. I noticed my wheels started to vibrate so I thought it was the balancing. I took it to the wheels shop and all 4 wheels were warped. Meaning there were no scratches or bends of any kind but the entire wheels was warped about 1/4. (You could see this on the wheel balancing machine spinning very slow. It toggled back and forth about 1/4 of an inch. The entire wheels was bent like it has been melted or like to bent bicycle wheel)

I took my set of wheels to the corporate West US headquarters (Hayward, California) and spoke to the rep. I showed him the wheels and a tech came out to inspect them. He said the same thing,"No curb scratches or bends but each wheel seems to have been warped badly. That is when the rep pointed to the wall and said which wheel do you like. I pointed to the tarmacs and he said ok, pull around back I will replace these for free.

I ran those wheels for about 6 months and sold them. My basic rule is the cheaper the product the less you get. I still feel for what I paid for these wheels you have to expect some lower quality product than the real deal. A full set of Rota wheels for the price on one name brand wheel. You make the decision of which is more important to you.

I feel these wheels have a fairly good record with people I know that have owned them. If you are running very skinny tires and a large diameter wheels expect problems with most rep wheels. Just my opinion.

Bottom line is that you get what you pay for. I bent 3 MSW wheels in one season. They are cheap and gravity cast. I have had my much more expensive and low-pressure cast OZ wheels on for two seasons, hitting the same horrible Chicago potholes, and haven't bent one. Like I said, you get what you pay for, especially when it comes to wheels.

i just make a statement considering the pictures that were posted. of course a wheel is going to break if you hit something going 70 down the interstate.

you think what you want about rota's. i will never run a set.

Its ironic that OZ wheels are rather well known for developing cracks
(it would appear that they crack much more regularly than Rota wheels, but then people dont like to slate OZ)

Hmm ok. I never said that OZ wheels can't break or crack. Any wheel will get messed up eventually. I just happen to have actual proof and FIRST HAND experience of using two different wheels, in the same 5-spoke design, with different prices, and different casting methods, driving on the same roads, using the same car.

I happened to bend 3 of the cheaper, gravity cast wheels in one season, while using much softer winter tires. My OZ's on the other hand have been used for twice as long, on the same roads, with stiffer sidewall tires, AND have been tracked on for two seasons with not one bend or crack. Like I said, FIRST HAND experience proved my point to myself. Again, you get what you pay for.
