Mk5 GT TDI 140 engine shudder at idle

I have a VW golf mk5 manual 2004 now on 76K have had cambelt change and had my yearly service done just last week.

I have had the same problem over a year now and its been occurring when I start the engine and even when its fully warmed up (though when fully warmed up its alittle less but when just started its very violent) and was originally diagnosed as faulty glowplug. So right now only have 3 glowplugs working was told by VW garage and VW specialist Nirro that its probably the glowplugs and the loom.

So having the glowplugs and loom changed next week, so lets see what will happen and will report back on this..

Also a new problem just occurred for last 3 weeks the car when its fully warm @ traffic lights the rev counter revs up to 1k and just stays there but if I carry on driving and stop again at lights it goes back to normal idle around 0.8k revs.

Thanks

I have this on my car now and again. I have changed the injector loom and glow plugs and it has not resolved it. Just to add I had this on my old gt 140 tdi so I think it's a feature of the car.

Solved at last... Failed or failing #2 injector. Swapped for new over the weekend.

No more judder under load or idle... !!!!! :)

Hey there,

Just picked up mu 05 GT TDI today.

On the way back noticed a slight shudder (intermittantly) and my heart sank!

I hope replacing it is not too costly?

Can you give me a ball park figure?

Bazman,

The shudder could be 1 of a few things. We would need to know when this happens and have a scan for Vagcom or OBDII diag box. My fault was under hard throttle when hot and then Idle.

Could be 1 of :

  • Failing dual mass fly wheel
  • Egr valve sticking or needs a clean
  • Fuel lift pump in the tank weak
  • Injector failing or in need of a clean
.

All these have been know to cause idle judder.

if the dual mass if failing/ed you will hear it knocking when turning the engine off or rocking the car in gear backward and foreward (engine not running).

A Egr clean is easy to start with, yuo dont need to remove it to give it a basic clean to help solve the problem. Use a EGR cleaning spray from any good Motor factors for Wynns.

Lift pump is a easy swap if you are mechanicly minded. (I picked a new on of ebay)

Injector.. Wouldnt recommend for anyone who hasnt rebuild engine before. I was able to do it in an hour and a half and the basics are in the haynes manual. Cost of the injector for VW would be close to £500 + fitting but you can get them for 1/2 that on a exchange basis (that what I did). I used a company call Feather http://www.feather-diesel.co.uk/

Thanks Kelvin,

I have a OBDII diag box so I'll stick that on and see what is says.

It comes and goes but mainly it happens when I am sitting at traffic lights, its pretty irregular too when it is happening. It doesn't even happen every time at the lights either, only happends slightly less than 50% of the time?

If the dual mass if failing/ed you will hear it knocking when turning the engine off or rocking the car in gear backward and foreward (engine not running).

I haven't noticed anything when turning the engine off but I'll pay more attention next time. There is some rocking back and forth with the juddering though?

Fingers crossed the OCD can identofy the problem and that its the EGR. Have a nasty feeling the garage that flogged it would have fixed that if that's all it was.

Well just to note I filled that car up with Shell v-Power (only because the other diesel pumps had a queue).

Having run it on this stuff the shuddering had virtually disappeared.

Over the course of the tank I had maybe two occasions when I experienced a very slight judder.

Also seems to be giving better MPG so far about 20 miles further than normal. Might stick with this!

I'm having the same problem but not being solved with V power.

I've got a Golf GT TDI 140BHP Engine code : BKD.

Just had EGR cleaned. Still not better. The car seems like it's choking on start up with black fumes from exhaust (or front?) Then clears within a few mins or sooner if I drive or rev the car. Mechanic saying the EGR valve needs replacing and says problem is not due to injectors.

I know if I put foot completely down on accelerator then it will sometimes judder until reaches a certain rev or speed presumably for that gear. Quite scary when it happens on thr motorway so I have to shift down a gear and then go fast enough to speed up.

Any ideas what else it could be?

I have a 58 GT Sport and haven't experienced any problems like yours. I get a little judder when the turbo kicks in, but not all the time. I've been using 'Rhino Diesel' as advertised in VW BUS T4 & T5+. Since using this product in the fuel I've had no judder. It's pricy but thought I'd give it a go as so many good reviews by fellow VW users.
The bonus is I'm getting 60-70 mpg.

Hope this helps.

This is great thank you. I'll definitely give this a try. Currently used Lucas and Redex for cleaning. I guess they're not uo to the mark as Rhino.
