So I just searched across the entire country for gti autobahn and golf r in the 2016-2017 range. With similar mileage the price difference is about 6k. Hard to compare directly, but that's also about the price difference when new, considering the golf R didn't have as many rebates to bring the price down as the gti did.
However, the other gti trims, like the s would have been a far better value since like you're saying they could have been had for 24k and now they're around 15k. Meh, I still like my sunroof and fender audio enough that it doesn't matter .
