I just graduated from the Avondale, AZ campus last friday. I head to Rancho in two weeks. If you are interested in the VW program pm me and I will tell you all about it. When do you start?

I grad with a title of "Volkswagen Factory Trained Electrical Specialist". Sounds impressive but what it means is that I get the jobs that no one else wants.

You get the job that no one else wnats? doesn't sound too good to me:confused:

I've got time, but I'm pretty torn about which program to do...Its between Audi in Avondale and VW in Rancho

Both program are great. We make about the same money. The sheet I have says after you go on flat rate (about a year) the average VW grad makes 70-80k and the average audi grad makes 75-85k. So it just comes down to whos cars you want to stare at for 10 hours a day. And the reason that I get the jobs no one else wants is because the first year I am hourly not flat rate. So the stuff that takes long or sucks is all me. Can't wait!!!!

My contract is for about 45-50k for the first year. I have a couple of friends that have been in the field for about a 2 years and are clearing 6 figures. Not bad for doing what you love.

6 figures to wrench on Volkswagens? Is this at a dealership or is this at some kind of specalty place or what? 6 figures to be a grease monkey? How much does the schooling cost?? I always wanted to be a mechanic back in h.s. but my parents and everybody else told me I should do something else. So I burned myself out on drafting and now work selling parts for road construction equipment and I hate it.

If the training is not outragous I just might have to join your ranks Mister Dub Doctor.

Oh ok, pretty much the first year sucks because its your probationary period or whatever euphemism they like to use. i was thinking about Audi because, they essentially have the same motors in their cars, I'll still be able to buy and work on a gti for this reason and personally, I think the GTI is all VW has, so I'm leaning towards Audi because I believe their cars, despite being somewhat of a luxury version, have more performance models

I wouldn't call it a grease monkey anymore. They don't train mechanics anymore, they train technicians. Big reasons why the pay would be higher:

Huge demand for technicians now since less people are in the field and also because of the complexity in cars these days because of intricate engineering and computers.

Not even a really good, well trained MECHANICS can diagnose the problems of new cars because of the computer systems they put in cars these days, so pretty much, you gotta be even better trained than before.

I wanted to originally go straight into training for this, but gotta go to college so I can get my "degree" so people think I'm smart:thumbdown: :respekt: :bellyroll:  Going to UTI as well when I graduate though:biggrin:

The use of the term "grease monkey" was sarcasm.
I know you guys are not idiots, neither am I (in most respects:laugh: ).
I know about the mechanics that are better known as parts swappers...the ones who throw parts at a vehicle until they eventually throw the right part. I also know about the techs who know what the hell they are doing. I understand that cars have gone from crude contraptions to being more sophisticated that the space shuttle.
I've been on the fringes of the automotive service industy for years, just never really stepped in...and I'm thinking maybe now is my time to finally do so.

No dis:respekt: intended.

I was wondering Dub, you say 70% is computer, so do they teach you anything about tearing down the new motors , becuase I was just wondering for personal use (like if they ever make more performance parts later down the road, like cams and such) I'm guessing no, but I don't know:iono:

That 70% is when you are in the dealerships. At school, I rebuilt 5-6 engines, rear ends, trannys, AC systems, brake systems. They do teach you everything you need to know to do the job right. If you are looking for performance parts you will love Hot Rod U. 2 classes dealing with performance building a chevy 350 that you install in a t-bucket, and one class of bolt on performance.
No disrespect taken.... don't worry about it.
