He was 28.
The New York Post has reported that Ledger's apartment was strewn with sleeping pills and it was unclear if it was an intentional or accidental death.
He was found dead today in a Broome Street apartment, apparently from a drug overdose.
His housekeeper tried to wake Ledger up for a massage appointment and found him unresponsive at 3:20 pm, the New York Post reported.
She then called paramedics at 3:26 p.m. and father of one was pronounced dead at 3:35 p.m, 7.35am AEDT..
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ they believe it was not a crime.
The 28-year-old actor has a two year old daughter with former fiancee Michelle Williams. He was set to play the Joker in the upcoming Batman film "The Dark Knight."
A police spokesman said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the apartment that is believed to be his home.
Ledger was an Oscar nominee for his role in "Brokeback Mountain,'' where he met his wife, actress Michelle Williams, in 2005.
The Perth-born actor and Williams lived in Brooklyn and had a daughter, Matilda, but split up last year.
Ledger played the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in "Monster's Ball'' and had starring roles in "A Knight's Tale'' and "The Patriot.''
He was to appear as the Joker this year in "The Dark Knight,'' a sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins.''
