Sounds good so far.

Sounds horrible to me.
To hit its sub-$16,000 price point, some concessions had to be made, and that's most obvious when you crack open the door. ...the same Playskool-grade plastic coats nearly every surface you touch... ...climate controls have been reworked and not for the better... ...console-mounted push-button start is laughably contrived, coming off as an afterthought both in placement and execution.

...delivers a run to 60 in 8.5 seconds ... is an appliance.
Drum brakes, really?! Dear VW, wanting for a mediocre car isn't why I bought a Jetta!

At least there's still the GTI.

Volkswagen Jetta ranked last among small sedans by Consumer Reports

"The new Jetta is unimpressive," said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports' Auto Test Center in East Haddam, CT. "In an effort to bring the car's starting price down, VW cheapened the previous Jetta's interior and suspension, making it less sophisticated and compromising handling."

...

The redesigned Volkswagen Jetta is a shadow of the agile, well-finished car it once was.
Ouch!
The wagon version of the Jetta, called the SportWagen, is based on the previous generation of the vehicle; the SportWagen is still Recommended.

IIRC the Golf is still 'recommended' too, no?

So that's what I don't get about the US auto market. It does seem to pay to be cheap. The Corolla has been successful for years. Now the 'new' Jetta is selling rather well, by all accounts. The MkV Jetta didn't exactly set the market ablaze.

It seems to be the sign of the times. As much as it sucks; cheap, uninteresting cars sell really well!

Well, the people who are buying the jetta now were envious of it in the passed but probably couldn't afford it. Now that it's VERY cheap to get into a jetta they are taking the plunge. It may not be as nice as they used to be but people will take what they can get. Personally, I'm disappointed in VW for cheapening out on us, but they have to do what they have to do to make money. Especially since they plan on conquering the automotive world. Typical Germans. :)

Corollas last while VWs don't.

Therefore, most people that purchase a Corolla put up with them being cheaper.

I like this news as it helps my resale value.
