FWIW a shotgun is my second option for home defense. My hall is a bit tight at the top of the stairs so my walther ppk with hollow points is my first option.
Mine. I come out of my bedroom with stairs on right and kid's room just beyond. The AR/AK's stay in the safe and the 870 chock full of 00 is in the bedroom. I'm fine with that and so is my wife.
FWIW, rumor has it it's not THAT loud indoors out the bedroom window with target loads. Just ask the woodpeckers.

Tight quarters in my house. It's 2800 square feet, but there are lots of obstacles, walls and small hallways. It's gonna get up close and personal if something like that happens (God forbid it ever does).
