08 mk5 2.0 tdi sport starting problem

Hi all, recently been given a mk5 BMN 2.0 TDI golf dsg by a family member who hasn’t got the time to resolve.

So it driving it no issues at all, parked up and after a few hours it would not start. He told me a mechanic prior replaced the crank sensor and it ran but a bit rough. That was a few months ago and since he just left it sitting. So I went up to collect the car as he needed it shifted. Now took a new battery with me and it started after a good few attempts and I managed to drive it 10 miles home. So that was on Sunday and since I’ve not even looked at it. Went to try and start today and dash error ‘oil sensor garage’ has appeared along with the yellow oil symbol flashing. So would the oil sensor cause the starting issue?

Before I drove it away I scanned and cleared code P0322 which is crank sensor I believe but that could have been there from before and mechanic who apparently changed it didn’t clear the code? I’ve scanned again today with my snap on tool and no codes present? Should I scan again with vagcom and upload results here?

P0422 is a catalyst/O2 issue.
It may be helpful to do a full scan, yes.

Apologies, it was code P0322 just realised typo error. I will scan with vagcom and put results up. Do you think it’s poss the oil sensor would stop the car starting?

The oil pressure sensor can prevent starting in some...but not familiar enough with the TDI.
The engine speed sensor definitely will do so.

If you've cleared codes and it hasn't yet run...it may not store another code until it is ran. But try a full auto scan. May not be anything there if/since you've cleared the codes.

Just seems bizarre if the G28 sensor was changed quite recently. Im going to check the wires too incase there’s a short there. Will post up vagcom result soon as I can. Thanks

Every one of those codes is due to low voltage....where are you with that?

I’ve just put on a new battery as the last went dead. I tried it again today and it just kept on turning over but not start. I assume this could well have drained the battery?

What is its current voltage? VCDS - Engine - MB 004 will show voltage. Did you look at the voltage of the new battery when it was installed?

Also...have you looked at all of the main fuses in front of the fuse panel, next to the battery?
Are any of these burnt through between the studs? It could also be a ground/earth issue, but I can only say inspect the main ground/earth; disconnect it, clean it, and reattach it.

No fuses burnt out. And battery is 12.5V. By saying main earth I assume you are meaning the earth battery terminal?

Yes...the ground/earth from battery to body/chassis. Should be just in front of the engine bay fuse box. Disconnect it and scrape or scrub with wire brush, the mating surfaces.

Also might try cleaning the battery terminals and re-clamping them.

I wouldn't say completely ignore it, as the car may have more than one issue going on.
But it, P0322, too is a disconnect in power. So I would focus on power and hope to resolve that first. The ECU will take care of the engine by shutting down when engine speed reports cease to come.

I know I’m late to the party, but is this engine a pumpe duse? If that’s the case, I can see how oil pressure may affect it.
