Dude, windows is right to make you upgrade, that baby needs a full refresh :ROFLMAO:

Just for reference, 80plus platinum is like the minimum standard of efficiency for a good PSU these days. (92% efficient)

You would also likely cut your power consumption by over 100w with the newer hardware (all while being over twice as fast) - M.2 SSD alone is worth it!

Why replace it all when it works?...The energy cost savings are outweighed by the upfront costs & environmental costs of scrapping a working "old" model & building new components.

My 7-8yr old "bronze" is actually a "80PLUS" (sorry) which is stated as 85 to 88% efficiency ..so not worth ditching unless for a "Titanium"..& thats more money. for 8-10% gain.

SSD been there done that....had them fail without warning! I have an M.2 slot on my my 6yr old mobo anyway which I don't use...again because I don't fully trust SSD.

"other expensive hobbies" besides cars & PCs..... .....photography, ski mountaineering, winter mountaineering, climbing, Hi-fi ........too many!!

Oi, don't get me started on HiFi. I try very hard not to get too deep into HiFi. I've had arguments with a friend about how the $800 per meter cables with ultra 99.9999999% pure Copper are no better than the $150 cables, but he won't have it. He drops $6,500 on a McIntosh tube amp at the drop of a hat because it's supposed to sound slightly warmer than the one he already has. I've got a $100 Schiit DAC, a $100 Schiit headphone amp, and a $150 pair of "ChiFi" IEMs and I am happy. I spent a little bit more on my media system, but that's because I love the sound separation for movies. Audio is one of the most subjective hobbies around, and that's a blessing and a curse.

Other than cars, my main expensive hobby is photography. The expenditures are fewer and further between than the car stuff, but it's like swallowing a horse pill when I buy something. My idea for a PC was to build a modest beast and then don't upgrade until I absolutely need to.

@golfdave If I'm not mistaken the ssd that failed was a long time ago? Like 3 or 4 years? The controllers on the SSD's used to be really shitty from a reliability standpoint. Typically the data can be recovered using the right software just on your home PC. But, that said, they have gotten much better and much cheaper in the past 2 years.

Prior to the M2 slots when SSD first came out, I made sure to get one and only put my OS on it for that extra speed in the OS performance. I then had an 8k+? RPM hdd for my gaming installs. It's been working out pretty good. I've since bought a secondary SSD to put my higher performance related games on for that extra speed as well. So 2 SSDs, one for OS, one for gaming, and then two of them fat clunky older HDDs with a few TB for storage needs (pictures, videos, porn, music, the norm).

I don't mess with hdds anymore. The only ssd I've had that failed was an ocz and that was a long time ago. Since then I only buy samsungs and I've never had a problem. I've seen a lot more hdds fail.

About 2 yrs ago...& it was the controller that failed, as no computer would talk to it.....What gets me it that it wasn't stressed, & it failed suddenly, no warning & that's what I don't like.

I will eventually use an SSD but its trying to figure out a solid way of reorganising all my data so that if a controller suddenly goes I'm ok..especially for the operating systems...& I can't use "cloud" back up where I am as the internet is crap....overhead wires to the house!

I was thinking of using the M2 just for the OS.....maybe on the next build!

As for my 4 x HDD in my computer I have one with just the OS & programmes on, one with just music on, one which is the daily back-up, & one with all my photos/documents/videos on......everything is partitioned on these drives as well, i.e. photos/videos/doc are 3 different partitions on the same drive.

These means for photo editing I have one disc running with the OS/programmes..& another disc running with the photo file itself...& the back up on a third disc.

Virtually all my HDD are "black" series, 7,200rpm SATA III 6Gb/s with high cache for the storage capacity.

HAHA......I don't mind spending money on expensive parts, but even then I draw the line at some of the stuff which is like WTF??.....Its chasing that last 5% performance which costs £££££££££.

I used to modify my old hi-fis & do improvements for mates hi-fi-& rebuild speakers. Designed & built my own cross-overs, & hand wound my own air cored inductors.

Still have to strip down, re-foam the cones & re cap the amp of my parents old B&O system....nice 80's design!......

I went digital a few years ago & just have a Denon amp, network player (can play 24bit 192kHz) & CD player. All my music is CD & most copied onto FLAC on a USB stick. However I started buying studio masters from the original record labels......& yes the difference between "compressed" CD (16bit at 44.1kHz) & 20 or 24bit at 90, 96 or 192kHz....is astounding! Specially since I heavily modified my Monitor Audio speakers!....£8 to £16 for a capcitor...& I needed 6 of them..or £10 for an inductor & I needed 2 of.....£6 for a mills resistor & I needed 4.....a bit expensive, but cheap compared to the top end stuff! However, better build & tolerance that the basic factory stuff to make the cross overs behave as they should & the speakers produce far clearer sound!

Photography....yeah......just...I live within 1hrs drive of one of the best "toy" shops in the UK......Most of the UK photography pros shop there. The second hand stock & new stock is huge & comprehensive....& every time I get invites when the reps are there & doing deals I usually melt my credit cards!...bar stewards!!...

EaseUS software will recover data off an SSD with this problem. I've used it successfully on a drive with the same problem.

Yeah I think the best thing you can do is always have a backup of your actual important stuff that you cannot afford to lose (I guess personal video/pictures would be #1). If you have a HDD that failed with your OS on it or gaming related stuff, who cares? You can reinstall the OS on a new drive, same with the games. The stuff you gathered however on your storage drives may be irreplaceable though so you want to make sure you ARE backing that drive(s) up. Heck, I even think you might want a cloud backup for videos/pictures. Imagine a fire? Your physical backup is toast as well. If you lost them, no way to get them back. It's like someone burning images out of your head permanently, lol.

I have EaseUS software...just that when the SSD controller goes the computer can't talk to the drive & therefore cannot access the memory chips....doesn't matter what software you have...only way around it is to take the case off the drive & bypass the controller board & solder wires direct to the memory chips...I've seen a few tech videos on it...Most other types of SSD failures can be recovered using software....

Cloud storage is out of the question for me...old copper overhead wires at 18mb/sec MAX!!.....so I have an additional external master back up.

I love reporting FB Marketplace sellers listing graphics cards at obscene prices. Ran into one yesterday with a listing image with 4X 3060Ti boxes, 3X 3070 boxes and 3X 3090 boxes. They were listed for $1500, $1900 and $2500, respectively. Dude's fucking insane.
