Hey guys! First off thanks for reading, i am semi new to the forum but not to mkv's. So i have read through every thread/post i could, find but didn't see a fix. So just installed the k04 kit kept the gfb dv from cts along with s3 injectors. Prior to k04 had cold air, gfb diverter, hpfp upgrade, redtop coils and plugs performance downpipe along with uni stage 2 hpfp tune with no problems at all through out all rpms ranges including WOT pulls. Now after k04 install with the injectors and tuned to uni 2+ i have a random misfire at idle that i cant feel but can see on vcds but never set a code, then at higher rpms pulls/WOT pulls it misfires horribly now on one particular cylinder at a time it chooses one then shows a high number of misfires on the counter while logging until i start to drive normal again. Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated. car is 07 mkv gti 84k was fully stock up until when i bought it at 81k.

Also forgot to add after spirited driving, on occasion when pushing in clutch or going to neutral the car will stutter to a point where it dies or gets close. I've checked logs and not sure i see any problems. If anyone knows what logs would be most beneficial to run for testing purposes let me know.

Went through misfire problems myself after installing a K04 and running Unitronic's Stage 2+ tune. Make sure you're running:
  • Genuine S3 or Golf R (MK6) injectors. A seal kit is required when installing these
  • BKR7EIX spark plugs gapped to .028
  • Genuine R8 coil packs. They have red tops, but should also show they're made by Eldor. Latest part revision is 06E905115G
  • An intake with a properly formed MAF housing. Unitronic tunes tight so any deviation from the stock housing will throw off the reading and affect performance
It's difficult to tell what's going on in your graph as we cannot see engine speed, throttle input, or throttle body angle. If your misfires are isolated to one or two cylinders try swapping spark plugs and/or coil packs to different cylinders and see if the misfire moves. If it does, then you know one or both are the issue. You can isolate which by swapping one or the other from the misfiring cylinder(s).

Here's the thread where I worked through problems I had: https://www.golfmkv.com/forums/index.php?threads/07-k04-gti-misfires.196128/

First thing I would suggest is to remember to select the turbo button on the MB page, if this is VCDS data you are posting. It will show more data points if you do.

Also, your coils; you say they are red-top. Are they just red-top or genuine R8?

This is resistance of some Coils and their Ohms;
Stock: 3.3 ohms
5 cylinder coils: 4.75 ohms
R8's: 5.31 ohms
Okadas: 6.2 ohms

Stock coils have a thicker arc and can handle a larger gap. R8's have a finer arc and require a tighter gap. I do not know where your generic red-top coils fall regarding their resistance. Do you know how to read the plugs for cold and hot fouling? It appears your knock sensors begin reporting misfires a bit later in the revs, but we do not know as there is no rpm data on that screen. Typically, if it is misfiring in higher revs, the problem is more likely to be ignition. It usually points to it not getting a stable arc...in other words, the arc is getting disturbed. Coils matched to the plugs or vice versa is required to sort this, along with a good read of the plugs; is it running rich or lean.

I do not see which plugs you have as well or their gap. Can you provide that information? I will go up and read more carefully to see if I missed it.

Then, when you do a data pull, could you post data from one gear from about 2k rpm to redline(2nd or 3rd gear...3rd gear will go to 90 mph, so remember that)...and remembering to select the turbo button in VCDS. Try and always include a MB which includes rpm and throttle position/angle, because we will see changes and not see if and when you let off the throttle...and at what rpm something is happening.

This is the turbo button I believe you did not select for the data you show above;
https://flic.kr/p/2iDA5Xo
Again, my initial suspicions are with the ignition pairing you have with the coils and properly gapped plugs for those coils. Given your tune...I would stick with and install new genuine oem coils and oem plugs with a 0.028" gap, or perhaps NGK-PFR7B plugs which come gapped at 0.028" and work great with the oem coils and increased boost. I use PFR7B plugs with my K04 set-up.

You may try finding the ohm your coils should have..

i do not know anything about hot or cold fouling, i can say its running rich based on the plugs when i pulled them. i was running NGK BKR8EIX, gapped at .028 i went down to the 7's but i think i was misled by the seller of the coils i bought. i have 4 new oem 06e905115f coils coming in tomorrow to change out(any recommendation on proper plugs/gap for those coils?) i will attach a 2nd gear pull i did today on the way home, turbo enabled vcds log with rpm and throttle pos.

Do the same data log when the new coils are installed. If misfiring doesn't change...you should probably have its compression checked or buy a compression tester and check it yourself. Do not forget to unplug the injectors if you do the test yourself.

You may want to check for something else...it is rare, but it does happen. Sometimes spark plugs will drop their crush washers when removed...more so when someone removes and reinstalls the same plug a time or two. Next time you change the plugs, look at each to be sure they still have their washers attached to them. Then, slip a magnet down each plug hole to see if a washer had fallen off a previous plug....it may be stuck to the head. The magnet will stick if there is a washer in there...and not if it is just the head and no washers. A double washer will cause misfiring.

Also, if there is oil in the plug wells...be sure to clean and remove any oil down there before installing plugs.The rocker cover seal should be replaced if there is oil in any of the wells.

With the new coils should I reinstall the 8’s or 7’s based on the comment you made earlier on requiring a tighter gap and matching?
