Caution: I thought, when I was researching them, that the K40 was one of the worse performers out of the laser jamming bunch.
What companies were better performers?

Hi Clownish, this is a really great thread (not sure why I hadn’t stumbled on it before), I also have a TRed MKV R32 that I bought in ‘15 and I’m getting a lot of good ideas from this for my own proyect
Any chances you’ll be in this years WITW? Be nice to see upfront some of the items that you have described.

Man, I haven’t dropped by in a minute, your car is looking good, what is the pn for the plate bulbs? I have finally crested the point of keep or trade to keep. So.... we all know what means. Hahaha

I'll have to dig out the receipt and find the part # for you. I think it was cheaper for me because of employee discount rates and the homie hook up, but I'll let you explore - haha.
I held off on the rebuild because winter hit and I was under the weather for a few months - hopefully springtime stays clear enough I can daily the GTI and put the R32 through a serious refresh. As of now, it's chugging along but making so much brake noise from unevenly wearing and I know the fronts are a few years old so I'm just going to replace everything up there at some point soon. Pads, rotors, caliper carriers, anything else I find. Has new tie rod ends and sway bar end links so hopefully it doesn't need a wheel bearing or anything... I kind of think the front right needs a wheel bearing.
Werd man, thanks! No rush.
Damn dude under the weather for months?! That sucks. Good you’re doin better now.
The brakes are driving me nuts on mine too squeaking like a maniac, but still have plenty of meat. Fronts are original and the rear are on their second set. Mines been a little crapper all of January. Threw 3 different issues at me. The gas cap, thermostat and a weird one p2096. May have something to do with the leaking flex pipe. Tsat parts on the way with an aluminum crack pipe. But now I gotta save for a full on nuts to butts exhaust. Shitty that with the emissions I have to contend with I pretty much have to stick with OEM on the cats. I’m considering another GTI for a daily just for fuel economy sake. Haha. 70 miles a day, maybe the R isn’t the best? Lol! These cars are fun huh? Haha

In 2014 a new mk5 r32 cat was over $1000 at 102k mi. And the owner of this car paid for it. Almost $2000 with parts and labor. Yikes.
This car had such a good service history. Replaced trunk latch, radiator, serptine belt, a mirror assembly, a headlight, the list goes on. The PO dealt with all the common mk5 issues - at the dealer - and paid out of pocket for a lot of it.

The PO definately wasn’t buying the parts from Vortex :S , I’ve seen different references to issues for the MKV R32 but not a summarized list (at least I haven’t found it) of what the common ones are. What would these be in your view so I / others can be on the look out and proactively approach these? Fortunately my car is still very low mileage and other than changing the AC compressor about a year ago, all has been great
