cant get my 50mm f1.8 lens to work

i just got a nikon 50mm f1.8 this weekend and it wont work on my d40x. i know its not an af-s lens but it should still work under manual mode. from what i read online im supposed to lock it at f22 and then put it on manual mode to be able to shoot. but the screen keeps telling me to "lock the lens on the highest f-stop number) what do i do?

some some fun with Bokeh at the more open f stops, I'm really enjoying that aspect of my EF 50mm f/1.8 cheapy canon lens.
