Exterior cleaning - sponge only?

Got mine out of the box last week, and still haven't gone with it to the car wash because I fear the "brooms" that they have there, told they can contain sand and scratch the varnish.

So far I've only used a sponge, but I was wondering if there was any broom out there I could use just at home, and would it be safe? My friend told me something about using brooms with goat hair as they are supposed to be softer, but I thought about asking you guys if the sponge is the way to go.

Personally I would not wash mine with anything else, but maybe that is just me.
