Yeah turn it off at the track for sure. It will get in the way of finding and exploiting the car's limits.
If you're a good driver (and not just egotistical, everyone thinks they are a good driver and we all know some really suck), I'd suggest just leaving it off if you're competing. Some people may benefit from it though.
It will save your ass in the rain or snow, but that's OT.

Ever stomp on the gas with it on? It's pretty restrictive
Turn it off for a straightline, but in general just avoid streetracing.
As dmw16 says though, it must be off for launch control :evil: (aw man, they got rid of the burnrubber emote).
