I think the rear looks a bit like a Passat.
And it looks slightly like a TL also. (Those rear markers and maybe the front end a bit)

I guess that's what I was getting at. I think it looks sweet, especially for a Malibu. Wow I remember my Grandpa's 97 or so Malibu and you look at it and all you think is "rental car". It's just not a very original design. Then again not much is these days. I mostly see A4, but also elements of an Acura TL, 3-series. The new Accord is kinda the same way, I don't know what it looks like but it sure looks familiar, and European. Again not a bad thing.
