Will you be sticking with stock suspension? If so both will work. However the second wheel is going to poke out a tad.

If you lowered the car, the second set would not work.

The idea offset (or ET) for the GTI is between 40-50.

Actually, they should both work just fine. The 38mm offset is a bit aggressive but since it's a 7.5" rim you'll only extend an extra 6mm compared to an 18" Karth. 6mm is less than 1/4 inch. It will look aggressive but won't "poke" out and you should be fine unless you slam the suspension in the future. I think you'd be fine with a standard Cup Kit. You can go with 215 series tires if you want to be on the safe side but 225/40 should also be fine.
