Please excuse my lack of knowledge on wheels but I have some questions about dimensions. I found these wheels (tirerack.com) and the dimensions are:

18x8
+50mm
225/40-18

Will these work on the gti? I understand that the "18" in "18x8" is the rim size but whats the "8" mean? And whats offset mean? These had a +50 offset. Again sorry for these "dumb" questions.

8=width of the wheels
You need an offset of 40 or greater. 50 will be fine. Anything around 35 will stick out too far and rub if you lower your car, which you should if you put 18s on this vehicle.
