Hi all.

im currently looking to add a little bass to the stock system in the golf.

got my monoblock amp (250W RMS x 1 at 2 ohm, 170W RMS x 1 at 4 ohm)
im looking for a good 8" sub that i can install in a small sealled encolsure.

been looking at the Pioneer TS-SW841D shallow mount 8" sub.
it requires just 64mm depth. and needs a small box too. just 6 - 14 litres.

anyone had any experience with the above unit ?
can you recommend a better unit ?

im looking to spend no more than about $200 on the sub itself.
the pioneer is just $218 at ryda.

im not looking to have earth shattering bass, i just want to fill in a little
of what's missing in the stock 10 speaker system.

any thoughts ?

Jason.

Yep.

Go a nice 10, like a JL W3, or Image Dynamics IDQ10. These can be used in very small enclosures, and you just get a custom fibreglass box mad to fit in the boot.

Speak to Marty at FHRX studios, or you can build one yourself if your up to it

Thanks for the response, but I'm really looking for an 8" sub.

I feel a 10" would overpower the rest of the stock System.

I just want a sub that will compliment the existing oem speakers.

I will be building the enclosure myself from MDF with fiberglass
internal reinforcements.

Built a few like that in the past with good results.

Why would a 10" overpower the rest of the system? If it does.......turn the gains down

I would recommend amplifying the stock speakers, makes it sound a million times better.

also if u want an 8" there are a lot around - JL, and Image Dynamics are my recommendations for reasonable budgets

firstly, i would really like to be able to amplify all 10 of the facotry speakers,
or better still replace them with good splits. but.....

my budget won't go even close to that.

also, im over the whole Doof Doof thing.
did that in my younger days, and im now paying the price for it.

i have permanent, incurrable ringing in both ears, all from long exposure to high volume music,
mainly from the car systems i have had in the past.

all im looking for now is just to fill in a little of the low end that's missing in the OEM system.

even if i had the budget to go for a big system in the golf, i (probably) wouldn't do it.
i don't trust myself, and the temptation would be there for me to go booming about the palce,
and in doing so, go even more deaf than i already am.

at the moment im looking at a kicker 8" or the pioneer 8"
(mainly due to price, and the fact that they both have very shallow mounting depths)

kicker is $169 at ryda
pioneer is $218 at ryda

Honestly getting the pioneer, is about as good as flushing your cash down the toilet.

As for an 8". Image dynamics ID8D2, Polk audio momo 8, jbl gto804. Sundown audio sa8. Re audio 8. Will all do the trick.

But honestly I would recommend an image dynamics ID10D4, it one of the cleanest smoothest and excellent blending subs with the power you have on hand.
Box size is about the same as the 8" subs I mentioned or just a fraction more.

I can assure you that will be my pick. Have done a few vw's with id10, sounds great and blends. Never hooky or over powering. The IDQ10, will be the next step. But no where near enough power and box size requires just larger than the ID10. Ie twice the box volume.

Pm if you like any further info.

Ok jsut amplify the front 3 ways - just get some decent passive crossovers (even 2 way crossovers will do) and amp them, sorted.

Bridge the rear channels of a 2 channel amp to powera sub, done. Oh and a bit of dynamat in the doors. Thats what Ive done, and its great. If you really want, which was gonna be my next upgrade, get a 5 channel amp - I was looking at the JL HD900/5.

there's no way my budget will stretch to a second amp for the front stage.
(not one that would be worth using anyway)

i have a total budget of about $600.

have already spent about $200 on an amp.
have spent about $50 on wiring and fuses etc.
have a budget of about $200 for the sub itself.

that leaves just about enough for materials to build the enclosure from.

im happy enough with the output from the stock mid and top end, i just want the low filled in a little.
