some people use 5-10mm spacers. I've seen 15mm. Usually its used to bring the wheels to sit flush with the fenders.

If you are going with spacers, definitely get extended struts just to stay safe, running spacers minimizes the struts threads that you bolt the wheels lugs on, which causes stress on them and they might fail and make the wheels fall off the car, specially if you are causing even more stress on the struts by autocrossing..

I always suggest staying in the safe side and getting wheels with proper offset from the first place, spacers were never a choice to me..

depending on how far you push them out, it can cause abnormal wheel bearing wear.
