Rear badge replacement

I've got a Golf MK 1.9 TDI but somehow my boot badge/handle has got 3 big scratches in it. They appeared after I went to the supermarket.

I have seen a replacement badge for sale on ebay which I am considering buying, it's currently at £30 but I want to see what they cost brand new direct from VW as this one also appears to have a small scratch in it.

Can anyone tell me how easy/hard it is to remove the old badge and insert a new one and how you would do it?

Also I'm after some replacement alloys, preferably the Imola 16" used on the 2.0TDI and Touran. Anyone know where the best place to look is?

Cheers
Scott

if youre talking about the rear emblem that pops the hatch its 200USD from VW. to replace it you have to take off the panel on the inside of the hatch and unbolt the wiper motor and emblem. take the cover off the wiper and unbolt the wiper. then use some form of puller to take off the wiper while preventing any damage to the windshield and paint. a battery terminal puller works good. reassembly is the reverse steps. to get the wiper back on, line it up the way you prefer or think is straight and tighten the nut on. keep turning the nut until the wiper is pressed back onto the splines.

Thanks NewaveRide, sounds quite difficult so I might let the VW dealer do it.

Do you know where else can you get hatch badge/openers online for cheaper prices than direct from VW?

if doing all that work, I would do a delete all together and vag-com the car to pop the hatch when unlocked and add stronger cylinders up there to open it for you!

that gets expensive with the body work.

unfortunately i do not know of any other places to get the rear emblem. it is a small computer module itself so thats the reason it gets pricey. labor wise should be too much. should only take 1.5 hours max. if youre gonna just get the dealer to put it in then just buy it from them as well

He is correct, to buy a new rear OEM VW emblem you have to buy the whole rear hatch mechanism which is quite an expensive part.

There are a couple of companies that make black or carbon fiber replacement badges, however. I plasti-dipped mine, you can remove the chrome VW emblem from the hatch locking mechanism but you must do so very carefully. I used a credit card and a really small flat head screwdriver wrapped in felt (to keep from scratching it) to pry it off.

If you are just wanting to replace the rear chrome part of the emblem then it is quite easy and doesn't need a dealer to do it.

There are 3 different types of rear emblem for the hatch that I know of. The first is a flat style embem. The second and third types look the same, but the fixings to the backing are different. You would need to ensure you order the right part code from VW. The part number is on the back of the emblem when you take it off, so no big issue.

Here is a "how to" link:thumbsup:

i dont really want to thread jack but my question is kind of similar so i didnt want to start a whole new thread..if anyone can chime in?

are all MKV front & rear emblems the same universally? like.. the jetta front for a rabbit front..jetta rear for a rabbit rear. obviously the GTI would fit since theyre both Golfs..but can anybody clear this up for me?
