Righteo.......

I am not going to pay the exorbitant fee the dealership wants me to (because they will provide a warranty for the labour at their nominated tinter) - which means, if the apprentice f*cks up...VW will go over and right the wrong.

Now...I have been in to see Trent (TKO Window Tinting - Vic Park)...top bloke, has done work for me before, but admits that this will be the first 2008 R32 that he will have tackled. We are happy with the tint that he is recommending , however....what have the rest of you done? Especially the 2008 model GTI's, R32's. Who did it, how much, (% tint if you are happy to tell me via the forum...otherwise PM me), and are you happy with the work, any issues with door panel fitment, electrics etc etc.

Trent has given us a killer price...but it's not all about saving $20.00 here or there. I want peace of mind, not a piece of a car left over.

Discuss.

If you want the peace of mind and you've spent $60,000 on a car I'd be going the dealer tint, you should be able to get them down on the price and you have the peace of mind that when you have problems the dealership won't tell you to take it to the tinter who may then either refuse to accept responsibility or do a bodgy fix rather then buy VW parts (especially when the fix is out of sight like broken clips etc).

This is why I always get the dealer tint, plus you can get a loan car when the car is in being done. I have to get my rear window tint replaced because of a few errors and I'll get a loan car so no hassles.

Each to their own of course but I'm not going to stuff around on something that can cause me a heap of grief to save a few hundreds dollars on a over $50,000 car.

My GTI was done by the dealer and it is very good, as with anything like the tinting it really depends on who is there on the day. The installers can vary considerably.
It was part of the package price from JH.

Maverick your tint looks nice and dark on white, but surely you know they just take it around the corner to the local tint shop. And the film isn't necessarily better and definitely not cheaper. Tint shops do it everyday all day and will happily redo it if it's not to your satisfaction - nobody has to take off trims anymore. But i know where you're coming from - can put it back on the dealer.

I thought FJ you were going to get it done under the table? Did you go to visit Sungard? http://sungard.com.au/SuperStore/stores_wa.html ? I'd recommend that or 3M. I did a lot of research and went and looked at some samples from sungard and they can go a bit darker if you want on certain films. Black Azz may interest you if you don't like the reflective stuff. It's best to go for a metallic film if you can which so the dye wont fade and they are usually more durable.

Edit: All the golfs will be the same as far as tinting.

Yep well aware of that but they also can be a pain to get warranty work done, will want to fix any damage they have done and will often cut corners whereas if the car is in for a service or warranty work the dealer will repair it on the spot and charge it back to the tint company.

They have to pull off the door panels and other trim to get the tint fitted. If they are not familiar with the golf then expect problems, if they break a clip they're not going to stuff around trying to order a clip from vw but will leave it or put some mastic there to hold it in place.

Here are some photos of tint being applied.

"For cars - one of the most common tricks that the budget tinters use is to cut up to the rubber seals - or push them back with a plastic tool to insert the film just behind the edge of the rubber. Whilst you may save a few pounds on the price - the tinter who offers this type of service does so knowing that he will not spend anywhere near as much time - and provide nowhere near the quality of service provided by companies such as Shropshiretints - who remove seals, door panels, speaker units and any other obstacle in order to ensure the film is adhered to the total surface. completely agree. it's not worth it. even if the dealer takes it around the corner, their nuts are in the wringer for it. not worth any savings given the cost of the car. though i admit that this might be easy for me to say, being that we got it free (i think).

As long as you do your research and find a reputable place..

If the dealer through it in for free or 1/2 price i prob would have got it, but $595 is too much IMO.

It just depends how paranoid you are, but new clips wouldnt be that expensive if you found a rattle that eventuated from it. I'm sure they have diagrams of the car doors showing where the clips are (or even window glass cut outs of common cars to speed up the job).

I got the standard tint tossed in for free* and paid an extra $100 to upgrade it to the $595 tint.

The fact that the dealer has to fix it, and will give you a loan car and can do the work when the car is in for a service is worth hundreds to me, if I have to drop my car off at a tint place and then organise to get to work and then back again I'll lose hours of work and it's not worth the stuffing around.

Plus if they do screw up I have one person to complain to.

*free means I got screwed for less by the dealer or they made it up somewhere else

Our cars don't require the removal of the door panel.

Windows will sink into the door completely when the switch is pressed a second time. This then enables the top quarter of the panel to unclip away from the top window/door insert.

Window insert simply slides out, then whala...tint time!

Seriously, I wouldn't have a tinter attempt to remove the MK4 or MK5 door panel, it's unnecessary & risk breaking a door clip.

Well, maybe it is the first R32 that he's done, but he's done my GTI, so I fail to see the difference with regard to windows? :iono:

He also did my Skoda, which was the first he'd done. It's no big deal, it's just that he has to make up templates first, so it takes a bit longer.
