Warning: Do NOT use 3M Plastic Emblem adhesive

So I wanted to paint my rear GTI badge black to match the black/orange theme I'm working with. I went to autozone and asked someone there to point out an adhesive that would hold well, come off without too much effort should I need to repaint due to a chip, and, of course, not damage the paint.

He suggested I use this 3M Plastic Emblem & Trim Adhesive. The tube is black and the outer package shows a picture of a guy putting an unidentifiable emblem on a red truck.

I used the adhesive and after about an hour decided I wanted to reposition the bade (perfectionist). When I removed the badge, I found that the adhesive had burned through the paint in a couple places, right down to the primer. Where it hadnt eaten through, it had caused the paint to rise due to some kind of chemical reaction.

Don't let this happen to you! Use something else, like double sided tape.

wow. shitty man. sorry to hear.

I wouldn't think the word adhesive should go anywhere near paint when dealing with something in a tube.

Thanks for the sympathy guys

I'm talking to 3M and they're going to find some way to "compensate" me. We'll see what that means....

Yeah I was a little skeptical about it at first but my buddy convinced me that there was no harm in giving them a call. Baby don't get milk unless he cries, right?

They were actually incredibly sympathetic and helpful. Of course there are hoops to jump through (sending pictures and the original adhesive, getting estimates) but so far they have been pretty helpful. I'll keep yall posted.

very good news man. I have the 3M clear bra, and have used plenty of their double sided foam. <3 3M

3M makes a double side tape with red backing, forgot what it's called but it's for holding trim pieces on doors, stuff like that. The stuff itself is grey in color. The thing is weather proof so if you want to remove it at a later date, it'll come off with no damage, but holds pretty strong as it is pressure sensitive.

Don't get the normal yellow foam double side mounting squares from 3M those are very hard to remove once applied.
