GLOVE BOX LIGHT RETROFIT

I have an O7 and it doesn't have a glove box light. like some of the people here, i use my glove box everyday just because i constantly place my parking decal there. so at night it's hard to see anything without turning on my dome light and such.

is there any diy retrofit on this. i have an aux input jack w/c i never used. i know i can buy this part but does it have an available plug to connect that light fixture in? also, concerned about the switch that suppose to turn it on when the glove compartment is open.

i don't want the hassle of "tap lights". i'm looking for some oem functionality.

thanks in advance!:help:

My glove box happened to be out of the car at the moment - Feb 06 production, included the glove box light - no aux. Snapped some pics for you. The OE glove box light fixture is the same fixture used for the footwell light.

The switch is separate. Here are some a pictures of the light fixture and the switch, removed. The green pen cap is pointing at the plunger of the switch. the pn on the switch appears to be 1K0 947 561

The switch is mounted in a cutout on the base of the outer enclosure, inside the dash.
The switch is not accessible or visible without removing the glove box.

There are two harness connections, one for the switch ...

... and one for the light. The light connection can be accessed without removing the glove box, through the dash side cover. You can pop the fixture out from there too, in case you need to replace a bulb. << sorry for the poor photo, I tried to highlight the underexposed connnector ... >>

Hope this helps ... so you going to get rid of your aux adaptor?

We have that in out 07 models, its got an IPOD adaptor in it. I have an aftermarket Pioneer HU, so i dont need the OEM IPOD adaptor.. i was thinking of rigging up a glovebox light... or an A/V RCA hook up for video to my indash navi.

can you get the part numbers?

?? by looking at the parts I have? It would appear the standard glove box / footwell light fixture is 6L0 957 416. You probably have two in your car, although I don't know if all 2.0T Jetta's came with footwell lights, GTIs do include them. One of the footwell lights is mounted in the base of the glove box assembly, so you can just pop it out if you want to see one, its the exact same as the glove box light.

As I stated above, the switch looks like pn 1K0 947 561.

Each part needs a mating connector and pins (repair wire), but i don't see any numbers on those parts. They are all standard parts, any dealer parts dept should be able to find them for you.

first of all, JetTurbo, Thanks a lot for the very informative input. pics are awesome + part numbers. i got some questions if you don't mind ...again.

being my car has the aux input, do i have the 2 harnesses somewhere in there or do I buy them?

where do i plug them in(from the light fixture to ___, from the switch to___)?

thanks!

I do not know for certain, but I would be very surprised if you had the harnesses for parts that are not in the standard build. Only way to tell for sure is to pull the glove box, but I would not count on it. Just like our down graded alarm horns - the electronic one uses one more wire than our budget horn, the exrtra needed wire for the upgrade is not there, even though the rest of the world gets them.

The circuit is relatively simple, I do not know how it is done on the oe install, you would have to check a Bentley for that. Easiest way to wire it is ...

or you could run the 12V directly to the light and switch the ground, just uses more wire ...

The big question is -- does every glove box come with the cutout in the outer shell to mount the light switch?
That would be a pain to hand cut. :eyebulge:

how do you take the glove compartment out?
ignition off
remove side instrument panel cover
remove sill panel trim
remove pasenger side lower A-pillar trim
remove center cover
remove 7 screws
slide glove compartment outward and to the right, then pull out
disconnect wiring harness from contact switch (if present), disconnect footwell light, disconnect glove box light (if present)
in vehicles with glove box cooling, disconnect AC channel
---
before re-installing, re-attach AC channel to glove box connection
remove foam panel (two thumbscrews) to provide access to re-attach the other end of the AC channel under center dash.

what is "lower A-pillar trim"? is that underneath the glovebox? I don't see how you can only remove the lower A-pillar and not take the whole thing out.

Also whats center cover?? are you referring to center dash?
side instrument cover is the fuse cover thing on the passenger side and sill panel trim is the brushed aluminum interior trim?

All those are the terms used in the Bentley repair manual, which was my guide for glove box removal. If you plan to do any work on the car yourself, the factory shop manual is the best investment you can make. Just about every one of those removal steps has a Bentley section devoted to it.

The lower A pillar trim is the plastic kick panel. The center cover is the rectangular trim piece right above the center console front storage compartment - it conceals one of the attaching screws. The sill trim is the long skinny plastic piece next to the brushed aluminum part.

If you do not have a repair manual for your car, there are DIY that cover glove box removal as part of other projects - you remove the glove box to access the CCCM for example - DIY: hi-line cluster
