Black Smoke

Was following my wife today as she was driving our A3
There was the odd puff of black smoke when she put her foot down (girl Racer)
The car is stock other than APR chip so is this normal?
I know with more boost they need to richen it up to be safe but does it need to be so rich as to produce black smoke?

GTLIN...I know your thoughts so no need to post

Sounds like a diesel :p

Pretty sure it would be a ECU problem. Could be some crud in the exhaust as well.

i have noticed the same thing following GTIs including my own. mine is completely stock and when i really hammer it at night with a car behind me (usually my mate in his mini) i can see a little smoke on the water in the head lights.
another factor is your A3 driven hard or is it in granny mode most of the time? could be some carbon build up

if its any consolation i saw another GTI let go of a BIG cloud of black smoke under heavy acceleration the other day. It kinda shocked me too. My car has never done anything like that. Maybe it had the APR treatment too

Its GTILIN get it right...

the reason for the black smoke is simply because of our engines. The nature of having FSI.

My stock GTI does it, I've found the best way to reproduce it is over taking, go from 6th @ ~100kph to 4th and put your foot down for smoke show.

its a turbo.

all turbo cars when you put your foot down give out smoke.

My friends B5 A4 1.8T gave him a CEL with Cyl. 4 misfire and black smoke came out. Boost wasn't holding or reaching its peak too. A week later his turbo was gone..(oil leak)

i dont think oil smoke is black.

Black smoke will be fuel. And i guess a turbo charged car doesnt like to be run too lean under full throttle.

There are a couple of types of smoke which can be displayed.

Black/grey/brown cloud - unburnt fuel particles from a rich map during periods of high engine load, usually to control exhaust gas temps. A form of thermal management.

Blue smoke - oil being burnt, suggesting rings or valve stems seals in older motors. Can also be caused by turbocharger seal failure as posted above.

White smoke - engine coolant entering the combustion chamber or exhaust system. Usually caused by a cracked head or head gasket.

Yes definitely at WOT, even when the boost comes on hard with chipped cars during part throttle openings. It's totally normal.
