does this cable to everything the "full fat" cable can on the mkv's?

This cable will work with any CAN based VW and most Audi. That includes MKV's.

if you buy used, don't you have to pay ross tech for their additional support anyway? essentially making this more expensive than new? i'm not trying to be an ass, just might be interested and i'm not totally sure how that works

I'm not sure on transfer of support..

I've never used or needed it, but I do know the cable (dongle) unlocks the VAG-COM software, so their is no activation key.

support and warranty doesn't transfer to second owners. support can be purchased from ross-tech, if so desired. with that said, I and many others have bought used vag-com cables and have never needed support. the cable itself will be fully functional regardless of owner because of the dongle which acts as the key.

The HEX-USB+CAN lets you use it on older vehicles..basically all VAG. The Micro-CAN only works on newer CAN-based cars.
