Test drives and driving impressions

This is for all those thinking about buying a new car. I thought I'd start the ball rolling, as I went for a few test drives yesterday (I am in the market for a new car). The roads started out wet, then gradually dried out. Feel free to ask questions, and please add your own impressions.

Golf GT TDI manual (less than 50Km) 2.0 125Kw TDI
Drove OK, some initial turbo lag, then gets going at about 2,000rpm. Plenty of torque, good acceleration (revs well), quiet at cruise. Fairly restricted rev band compared with the turbo petrol motors. (and yes, I have a Transporter with a 2.5l TDI motor, so I know how to drive a diesel on the torque band).

Golf GTI manual (1,200Km) 2.0 TFSI 147Kw
Loved the response and power of the motor, good gearchange, nice supportive seats (but might be a bit tight if you are on the "solid" side). Ride was a bit jiggly/lumpy on less smooth roads. Handles well, nice feeling of connection with the car. The most fun to drive, but also probably the one most likely to blemish my "clean" driving record

Octavia RS Wagon manual (1,400Km) 2.0TFSI 147Kw
Best ride of these 4 (more absorbant, less jiggly and lumpy), more refined feeling than the others, less sporty, less involving and fun. Motor felt a bit soft, particularly at higher revs (nowhere near the zing of the GTI, despite both supposedly having the same motor). Good seats, with a bit more room but less support than the GTI seats.

Octavia manual hatch (20Km) 1.8TFSI 118Kw
Very, very impressive engine, pulls well at low revs, lifts well at higher revs, quiet the whole time. Noticed the engine seemed to lurch a bit when I backed off the accelerator a bit quick, has anyone else noticed this ? The ride was a bit jiggly (nowhere near as good as the RS), this on standard suspension and 16 wheels. Seats were pretty ordinary compared with the other 3. Would be good to try out this engine with the sports suspension (supposedly the same as the RS suspension, but with 17" wheels instead of the 18" wheels the RS comes with, but the dealer said they won't get one until March 2008.

Overall impression - Cars have certainly progressed a lot in the 15 years since I last bought a new sedan ! The brakes were very sensitive in all 4 (I had to drastically re-educate my right foot). I liked the GTI best as a driving experience, but the RS wagon was probably the most practical for my purposes (and rode a lot better). The perennial head vs heart debate I don't do many kms per year (mostly around town) so fuel economy isn't a big deal, but I do tend to keep my vehicles for a long time (typically 10 years or more), so I try to only buy ones I like enough to keep.

I would like to try a different RS out to see if it's engine performed more like the GTI I drove (I was promised that the GTI I drove had NOT been chipped, maybe it was just a particularly good example). Comments anyone ?

Well, maybe the GTI has a factory beast in the engine bay like the GTI we bought from Lennock. :happyanim:

Interesting to read your thoughts on the Fabia with the 1.8T. I find the GTI does that lurching thing a little bit as well, but is more to do with coming off boost mid corner in the GTI I reckon.

That said, I had my old Mk4 GTI 1.8T chipped with a piggy back Unichip ECU and at anything other than full accerlation the lurching/jerking coming off the gas was fkn annoying. I had them try to fix it so many times. In the end I just gave up and decided to use it as a bit of a learning experience. Was bliss when I got the MINI and it didn't do it I can tell you. What makes your experience more interesting is that the older 1.8Ts in the Mk4 Golfs had throttle cables and no variable valves etc and you'd expect, if anything, the 118kW version would be even further refined. They're a great and solid engine with so much research behind them.

Also, interesting to see you thought the Octavia had a much better ride than the others. Any comment on the flimsy interior, although, no doubt well built behind the "cost-effective" plastics.

Cheers Liam

Nice review mate.
Owning my GTi for 2 1/2 years i did find the GTi jiggle and lumpy when taking the car to its limits but after test driving the R32 that is what i am going for. Yes yes I could have done the springs on it.... that is why I prefer the harder firmer ride.

You've got a Transporter .. who needs a wagon :iono: Seats down the hatch is pretty large.
My Transporter is set up as a camper (bed, fridge and a whole lot of other camping and dog competition crap), it is a LWB and not that wieldy in suburban car parks (I'm sure parking bays are smaller these days, or maybe I'm just not as good at parking as I used to be  ).

The idea of getting a wagon is to move our 3 dogs off the back seat and banish them to the back (not enough room for them in the back of the Golf hatch, 2 are on the large side).

Yes, I was surprised at the ride of the RS, very impressive considering it runs on 18" wheels (the GTI was on 17"s, the 1.8T on 16"s). To be honest, I didn't notice any outstanding differences in the interior plastics, but I was more interested in how they drove.

That pretty much scratches the Hatch then. :frown:

Passat Wagon maybe? IMHO go the Skoda RS Wagon ...

We currently have a Honda CRV as the fur family carrier. The 4wd system sucks and it has a supreme lack of grunt (compared to the GTI). My wife likes the idea of getting a Passat wagon, I like the idea too, just don't want to pay for it! Maybe the Skoda is the answer? I'm keen to see what the Tiguan is like when it makes it to Oz.

I haven't written the Golf GTI hatch off (but I have to like it sufficiently more to forgo the extra practicality of the RS wagon).

The Passatt 2.0TFSI wagon never made it onto my short list because it doesn't come in a manual :frown: , and it is a bit bigger (externally) and a LOT heavier than the Skoda (like nearly 200Kg heavier), plus I didn't really want to pay that much extra unless I was totally in love with the car.

They sell Skoda's in Australia now??? Interesting.

Yep, wander along to Lennock Motors if you want to have a look at some. Only a limited range so far (Octavias and Roomsters, no Fabias yet)
