I don't think so, because the steelies of the regular Golf are only 15" wheels and you need at least 16" wheels to fit them over the big front breaks of the GTI.

Do you mean the MKIV Golf or the new ones? The older ones had the 5x100 bolt pattern anyway. Look for some Audi or Passat steels, they are the same 5x112 that we have on this car.

Indeed, the cheaper versions of the latest Passat get 16 x 6.5 steelies as standard wheels. Those are the only size of steelies that will fit the GTI cause those of the regular Golf are to small for the front brakes.

In a similar vein to the original post, if I put 16" steels on for the winter, are there any other adjustments that need to be made e.g. with the suspension set-up?
My GTI came with the 18" Hufs.

I don't think so because those 16" steelies are only gonna be 6.5" wide. That's a whole inch smaller then the original 18" wheels. You are gonna have a lot more rubber cause the proper tires to mount on a 16" wheels would be 205/55R16

17 x 8 front and 17 x 10 back for a ff car is

I have no idea what those wheels are but I'm sure that they wouldn't fit on your MK5 GTI because of the fact that the MK4 had a different bolt pattern like 5x100 while the MK5 has 5x112.

Me likes that a lot, though you're right about odd wheel setups (I know a feller who did something similar)... still looks damn good though, as you say.
