GTI stock oil

What is the oil fill in the GTI from the factory?
What weight?
Is it synth, regular, or a blend?
What are the suggested oil change intervals?

I'm looking for the manufacturers info. from your owners/maintenance books.
Thanks.

Service intervals:

5K - Oil Change
10K - Oil Change plus inspections and tire rotations
20K and 10K intervals beyond that - Oil Change plus inspections and tire rotations

40K - Transmission fluid (DSG)
60K - Spark plugs
90K - Timing belt

VW recommends full synthetic oil in all new GTI's.

The beauty of using synthetic oil I think BMW and Porsche are also now advising oil changes every 10-15k miles.

i heard you are not suppose to use synthetic for the break in.
but after that synthetic is great

I'm with you. There's now way l'm going to wait for 10K or 15K to do an oil and filter change. Every 3 months, for sure.

VW calls for 0w40 or 5w40 synthetic oil for this engine, and must meet the oil spec VW 502 00. I say DIY the oil change if you can, save some money

Once I go past 3500 I start to get a little worried. Even though I know everything is OK.

Oil change intervals can be a very hairy subject.
My 325i oil is changed when the onboard computer says it's to be changed.
Factory fill is full synthetic and oil changes have averaged at 13k intervals.
My 325i runs beautifully no problems. Synthetic is an excellent product.
You are wasting perfectly good oil if you are changing full synth at 3k miles.

As far as "break in", if the factory is using synthetic to fill it from factory then it's all good.
After the engines are built they are "broke in" at the factory. Customers simply do a final "break in" allowing trans parts, wheel bearings, brakes, tires, etc... to break in as well while allowing the new owner to get familiar with the new car. Be assured the engine gets a break in at the factory.

Service intervals are only for warranty type stuff... VW covering their ass. I suggest every 3000 miles. Due to the close clearences your engine was built with you don't have to worry about reg vs blend. You engine comes with "break in oil" after the first change due what you like, being a tech I HIGHLY recommend snythetic!!!! I have taken engines apart that ran reg and some with sny and the sny engines were in MUCH better shape.

I respectfully disagree. If it were an issue of covering one's ass, then a more conservative 3000 mile oil change interval would be recommended.

Throwing out full synthetic oil at 3000 miles is a waste of money and time.
The best way to know when oil is truly done with it's qualities is to have the oil analyzed, and that's available readily these days. I believe Pep Boys and Autozone offer the service.

Modern engines are built better than ever and it is that precise construction that allows for shorter break in times. Engines are "broken in" at the factory once assembled. That break in oil is drained and the engine refilled with factory fill, which I believe someone stated, is full synthetic.

Besides, oil has come a long way...I agree that throwing away synthetic at 3k is a waste of money.

New cars and synthetic work and I'm pretty sure they can go a little further than 3k. As for synthetic on older cars, I would never put synthetic in my 62 Beetle...nothing but nightmares

Ok this is rather confusing. So engines are broken in already? My AMSoil rep recommends 2 oil changes before using this oil.

I had a big reply here but just erased it all. Because I know what oil threads turn into on automobile forums. I will say this though. You people who are going to change your oil every 3k are doing exactly what another forum member said (wasting time, money, and good oil). To each his own though. It's not like it's going to hurt your car to change it that often. But it's not going to help it either.

the manual clearly states to change the fluid on the dsg every 40k. even vw's website says so. iirc, on the older (previous gen) cars, they said it was a lifetime fill, which isn't really true either.

Yeah it's all about those service bars on the BMWs that let you know how close you are

if ur gonna change anything at 3k just change the oil filter because in theory silicon never degrades(synthetic oil) and the only reason to change is to get rid of impurities.

Oil change intervals have changed since long ago. Today's engines are much more efficient than car designed awhile ago (non-O2 sensor, non-catalyst), Cars used to run 180 degrees internal. Now adays with our enviroment in mind they run much hotter (210 and above).

Regular oil does little to protect the internal components. The regular oil that is brought out of the ground has less protection than man-made synthetics on the market which are designed with more additives and protection. Some are adequate while others offer more and better protection.

If you buy a good synthetic it should offer protection till the manufactures specified drain interval.
IMHO, buying synthetic oil and draining every 3-5k is PERSONAL PERFERENCE (you are wasting your money). What the manufacture recommends for a drain interval with a specific approved oil should last.

Yes, VW/Audi has approved oils that they have on their list VW 502 00. Keeping in mind that under the maguson-moss act that any one company can not force you to use a specific oil or product. And if you don't use that oil they can not void your warranty unless they can prove that that oil caused a failure of a engine or component.

When I worked at Audi the most common failure among turbos being replaced was oil coking (regular oil not being changed at the specified intervalsand creating sludge/clogging of the oil feed line). Now synthetic is recommended for most turbo applications for that main reason.

Yes, many stick to the VW 502 00 because they don't want to deal with any legal challenges or are parinoid. Better safe than sorry is the belief.

I myself have used non-approved Amsoil in my VAG cars since new and have had no problems.
Amsoil is superior to the others out there and have stats to back up their claims and refuse to buy into the VW 502 00 program as many of these other companies do.

My advice is to follow your gut feeling and do what's best for you.

If you wish to discuss with me what I have posted, please PM me.

BTW, I have a modded 280HP, '98.5 Audi A4 1.8t Quattro 5-speed with 135k and I change my Amsoil every 12.5K. And pulled the stock K03 trubo out at 100K for the turbo upgrade and found little to no wear on the internal shaft or bearings. That's a lot to say for a great oil that's designed for long drain intervals. I have run 0W30 since day one in my Audi and would put in any new VAG car today. As a matter of fact, when I get my CW 5-door GTI, that's what's going in it at the first oil change.

I have several customers that have expensive NEW cars compared to our VW's and they run Amsoil in them wthout a problem.

I don't know where silicon comes into play with synthetic oil formulation.
But any oil be it regular (brought out of the ground) or man-made synthetic does degrade in time. Some faster than others, depending on their additives and how they are created.

He or she should also be recommending Engine Flush as well. Ask that person about it please!
