This DIY is writen assuming that the installer already has an ipod adapter installed. If you need assistance installing the ipod adapter see this DIY http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2480895

Tools needed:

-ipod adapter
-torx screwdriver
-flathead screwdriver
-dremel or other cutting device
-ipod dock (comes with ipod)
-epoxy
-pliers

Step 1

Remove shifter cover. Use a trim tool remover or a flathead screwdriver.

Step 2

Once the cover is removed unscrew the 2 torx screws holding the coin tray in place.

Step 3

With the coin tray lifted unhook the ESP and the 12V connections

Step 4

Pull the coin tray out.

*Becasue im writing this DIY after i completed this install i only have pictures of the final look and not the step by step process. Sorry*

Step 5

Using the dremel or other cutting device cut a hole in the bottom of the coin tray large enough for the ipod dock to fit snug.

Step 6

Epoxy the dock to the coin tray and allow to dry.

Step 7

On many ipod dock connectors there are hooks that keep the ipod connected. These hooks must be removed using pliers which allows the ipod to be removed from the dock without having to squeeze the cable head.

I hope this picture gets the idea across...eh, u'll figure it out.

Step 8

Epoxy the ipod adapter cable to the bottom of the ipod dock.

Step 9

Cut a hole in the black rubber mat to allow the dock to be shown from the top of the coin try and to hide and blemishes.

Step 10

Reassemble

Step 11

Your job is done, B.

Good job, man! The cutting on the rubber in the tray is a little rough, but I don't think you really see that all that well, so oh well. If my headunit controlled my ipod a little better, id def do that.

cool idea. is it stable while driving w/ the hooks removed from the adapter?

Yeah i havnt had any problems with it.
as you can see in the picture i put my soft ipod case behind the ipod to add a little cushion. And when i park i put the case in front of the ipod to hide it from thieves.

First let me say thank you for showing me what not to do. It almost looks like you epoxied the plastic ipod dock adapter plate (that you put into a universal dock from apple) into the change tray. A better way to go might be contacting this company and seeing if they can sell you just the dock portion.

I have a OEM VW MFD2 Navigation unit (my car came stock with a 6 disc indash cd mp3 changer) with the latest 4b nav software. I have been using SAT sirius radio for the past year or so. Got tired of the same crap and wanted to utilize my 130gb's of mp3's I have.

So I installed the OEM VW ipod adapter and ran the cable to the Mini Euro glovebox on the drivers side. It would be great for an ipod but for my new iphone I have to push it up at an angle to get it in there, and since I dont trust it being in there with the metal frame work I put a creative mp3 player suade thing over it to protect it.

This is a pretty damn professional job, and I love it. (I will post pics up tonight).

But your install gave me an idea, maybe if I dremel out a little box area in the front of the coin bin towards the buttons (ESP) instead of on the bottom. and reverse the direction of the dock towards the front, when I plug in my iphone it would have enough room to dock easily. What do you think?

Well after a few weeks of using it, I have decided to move the cable for the ipod to my center console. I purchased a new dock for my iphone and going to put it into the center. i will post more pics after I finish.
