00573 - Steering Torque Sensor (G269)

Brief History:

Dropped car off for alignment, all was well. Picked it up, after I got a block away I noticed the Power Steering Indicator light was lit on the dash.

Decided to drive home rather than turning around and do my own research first. Hooked up VAGCOM and that's the code present under the Steering Assist.

Clears fine, remove key from ignition and restart it and it comes back.

Only lost power steering once and that was while I was running through the Ross-Tech procedure on resetting these sensors. Ran through it again and my power steering came back.

I've got it booked in with VW for the 30th, just looking for suggestions.

I've got the car booked in at the dealer for the 30th to see what they think.

In the meantime, I've put on 150km already and it has yet to cause an issue. Once I am done work this week, I'll remove the LF tire and pull the fender liner for access and see what I can find. I'm assuming there is some connector, maybe it got knocked loose.

With VCDS I am able to take a reading from the sensor, it flucuates as I turn the wheel so that tells me it's not dead completely. The sensor does stop responding and that's where the issue stems from.

I'll keep this thread updated with what I find out. There seems to be very limited resources for this sensor.

Took a look today, I don't see anything physically wrong. No crimped wires, nothing pinched, all sensors look good. Reseated both sensors on the hubs to make sure they weren't causing some messed up signal.

Cleared code, came back after about 30 feet of driving.

So far, no good. Will update more on the 30th.

On a related note, anyone with a VAGCOM want to go out and measure block 001 on the Assisted Steering controller. I'm curious what values you see for the Torque sensor. Sitting still mine reads 0.000 and if you wiggle the steering wheel back and forth you get into -0.500 and sometimes -1.000 ranges. Curious what a "working" sensor produces.

Bit of an oddity the other night. Went out to do some running around, started the car and the sensor light wasn't lit. Of course I was like "Fuck you bitch, stay off". Usually once you clear the code, after a good 50 foot drive it comes back on so I proceeded down the street.

Light didn't come back on until I got out of the residential area and opened up on the throttle. Light came on.

After my first stop, got back in, started the car, no light. Decided to test it again and pay closer attention to what happens. Took a few hard corners at slow speeds, nothing. Stomped on it, nothing. Stomped on it again, got a bit of wheel hop and immediately the sensor lit up.

Sensor has been on everytime since then, that was probably 3 or 4 nights ago.

She's a weird one.

Car is in at VW Dealer now. Coilpack #1 started failing (any boost over 5psi it would give out) on me last night coming home from a VW meet out of province. Of course, they looked at that, told me they need to replace it before they can test the steering sensor.

Shitty timing on the coil, $70 for one through dealer. Too much of a hastle for me to rebook it at a later date otherwise I'd just order 4 and swap them out and go back.

I'll update more this afternoon once they get back to me. So far "the tech doesn't believe it was related to the alignment".

I didn't get it done. I just took it in to see what they thought. As we already figured, nothing I didn't already know.

I'll be heading back to where the work was done to talk with them about this. I don't just have $2300 laying around that I can toss at it.
