Folding mirrors on Mk5

Does anyone know if a set of folding mirrors will work on my 2008 build GTI?
These would be the ones with puddle lights. I'm assuming it would be a vag-com issue to get them working but any ideas on connections?

^Yeah VW of Aus in their infinite wisdom decided we don't need them for our market so opted them off the Golf's. Cost cutting

But yeah, given they're options pretty much everywhere else or standard, you should be able to get a set and fit them with a vagcom change. Always shitted me my R32 didn't have them as i have a tight garage and it's also great on a long night drive to fold them in without having to dip the wing mirrors.

Just wondering if the Passat mirrors are identical to the Golf of this era, in case this means the parts are easier to source?

If it helps, here's a UK dealer (Belfast, Northern Ireland) who has a happy Aussie custoer sourcing a stack of parts. Since the dealer is multi franchise VW/Audi etc, this might be an alternative option if you can't source the appropriate Passat bits locally.

prob worth a punt then is my summation. The puddle lights are of most interest rather than the folding bit but i'm sure i'll get to like.

I have a set of folding mirrors probably arriving end of month and I have the switch. Sure they don't fold very much but I was after the oem puddles lights moreso.

You need the following part numbers

1K2 857 507 BA 9B9 Left Mirror
1K2 857 508 AE 9B9 Right Mirror
1K0 959 565 JREH Switch with folding

I am not sure about connections on pre 2008 vehicles but the loom should have correct wires for 2008+ vehicles, it is merely a vcds coding issue. I will confirm all of this and provide pictures when I am done with the mod :)

Beware, there are other models mentioned on my-gti.com which are incorrect. They are for LHD cars. These are RHD specific as stated in ETKA.

You will also need door controllers of at least revision N as in this one.

1K0 959 701 N

There are also letters after the N which determine whether it can do folding. I couldn't find more information on which ones did. A Vag Com scan will only tell you the revision Letter and no further information.

You will either need to take your door card off to inspect which is a good time to do door warning lights or use vag com and try coding for folding mirrors to see if it is out of range.

AFAIK the 2008+ cars will do puddle and door folding and will also do rear door warning in addition to fronts. Door warning lights are an excellent modification and cheap as well.

I will post pics and any problems that I may have when i install. Hope they are here when i return from Japan.

i will tell you mate..the fold in is shit.. does nothing.. the actual way the mechanical parts work n fold it up is pretty usless. they dont fold tight to the car. but ye does look cool.

Yep totally aware of this. I really wanted the puddle but bought the $35 switch anyway because the function existed and it would be wrong to have the feature there and not be able to activate it :)

Where are the puddle lights located? Are they are on the underside of the mirrors?

If so, how do they illuminate the area between the doors when the door is ajar? Won't they be illuminating the area just next to the front qtr panel when the door is open?

Wouldn't the best place for puddle lights be under the door frame? i.e. where that red reflector is located?

Puddle lights are for when you hit the unlock button on the fob so you can see if theres a puddle when you go to get in your car so you dont get shit all over your floor mats, or get your shoes wet

Ah I see. That makes sense. Thanks.

I guess it would be good to have them in both locations then - one when you are in your car (under the door frame) and one when you are out of it (under the external mirror).
