I'm looking to buy a used 06-07 MKV GTI as a daily driver. Have you guys had any reliability issues with your golfs? If so, is it cheap to repair? Your input is appreciated!

I have an early 08 (FSI) I haven't had any serious maintenance needed in the 30k miles. Replacing the cam follower was pretty the only out of the ordinary service needed so far. I daily drive mine all year and it works out OK, gas mileage is great and driving is fun.
Honestly though, if i already had a fun car (like the mustang GT it seems like you have), I'd probably go with something else to DD with.

Just a AC pressure switch in 30K. GET A CPO CAR! That way you're warrantied to 74K miles. If something breaks out of warranty it's very expensive.

I have an 07 with stage 1 mods and all I've had has been the cam follower issue and that was at 50-60k miles. I'm now at 70+k.

My early 08 FSI runs well and i am close to 30K only issue was limp mode due to a bad MAF housing on my aftermarket intake.

dont buy a 06-07 GTI unless you have a trusted mechanic seriously inpect this engine.

high mileage 06 or 07 GTIs could have the following problems
-Worn (or ruined) cam follower
-PCV and Diverter valve
-Intake Valve deposits
-Timing belt
-Oil consumption
-Leaking valve cover gaskets and intercooler O rings
-etc

Its all about how the car was maintained. THey run VERY dirty so your guaratneed gunk in your injectors and valves. CHECK that cam follower before throwing a penny towards a mkv.

If you get an 08 TSI mkv its a diff story. -NO cam follower problems -Timing chain - piston operated diverter valve - new revision PCV - better fueling

08 TSI with a recirculating catch can and stage 1 chip would be an ideal fun DD

I wouldnt call them problems, it's more like high maintenance. Get a catch can, regularly check cam follower, and keep up with good oil changes and you'll be fine.

I have a 2008 with FSI. I bought it CPO with 10k miles on it, and it has 42k now. At about 25k miles the alternator failed, replaced under warranty. Nothing other than that. I maintain it myself religiously.

Well nobody has mentioned the reason why I went from a GTI to a Mustang GT.

The GTI has an open differential which results in a lot of front wheel (one wheel) spin from a stop if you drive in a spirited fashion. If you get upgrade your ECM to an aftermarket reflash then the problem only gets worse. (Yes I had summer tires on Hufs)

I have been told that I just need to be more mindful of my throttle application.
To me that is just a band-aid, not a solution.

Be sure to thoroughly test drive a GTI and see if it is right for you.

And to answer your question, no a GTI is not inexpensive to repair. Oh and be prepared to by specialized tools if you do your own wrench turning. (DSG fluid service, Triple-square tool bit for a simple brake job, etc)

I bet you wish you would have bought a 2011 GT?

So u feel u should be able to go WOT off the line and not have wheelspin...? Really?
