Nice work fuscobal, I think I'll start ordering up my parts in the middle of April. I want my car ready so I can run a few times during the summer out here in California, hopefully I won't have to run the heater.

I was just at Chuckwalla last weekend and as the cars temps went past the middle I could feel some heat soaking, so I turned my heater on and the temps went back to the middle. It never got too far past the middle though, that usually takes +90ºF weather...

The odd thing is that the aditional rad doesn't match my grille at all...the guides goes straight to the round fog hole, not the big rectangular opening (like in the pic posted by Bruce on the 1st page of this topic). Lucky I removed the fog lights, otherwise it would have been completely hidden. I wonder if there's other grilles for this rad ?

I thought the 'open' grille was intended for the 2nd radiator. :iono:

If there isn't another version you'd need to do some DIY.
Opening the grille a bit more is quite easy by first sanding the rear side
first and the then cutting the holes you want with a sharp knife.

I'll see what I can do about it...first I will install the other guide that came with that grille and forgot about. Searched Etka and it says that is specifically designed for the hot weather radiator. It has a quite sharp angle and goes somewhere between the IC and the small radiator angled abruptly towards the radiator !

Why are you guys going to all the trouble of installing these extra radiators? I've run almost all my DE's in +90F in hot humid conditions here in sunny South Carolina and Georgia with engine pushing 330 hp, with no cooling problems from the factory system whatsoever (but am using a good aftermarket intercooler). Are you overheating?

combination of, R comps, DSG, and VR6's are known to run hot, the MKIV R came with an extra sub-radiator, MKV didn't. They lowered the compression to help not run as hot and re-designed the intake to make up for the loss of power.

Anything above 85ºF and I have to run the heater. I also noticed as the heat goes up I loose a lot of power and heat soaks.

I'm going to get my parts list together and try and put in an order this week while I have the car up on jack stands for fastivus prep.

Alright, here's my initial order, sent it off for a quote:

PARTS FROM COMBINATION HOT CLIMATE GOLF R/MKV GTI
1. (1qty) N 015 082 13 - hardware to bolt up sub-radiator
2. (3 qty) N 909 083 01 - hardware to bolt up sub-radiator
2. 1k0 121 212 C - sub-radiator
3. 1K0 121 333 A - Air Duct housing
4. 1k0 121 101 CB or CC - Hose from intake on upper radiator to sub-radiator
5. 1k0 121 064 A - hard/soft line for cool coming out of sub-radiator
6. 1k0 122 051 BC - hard line for cool coming out of sub-radiator
7. 1k0 121 156 BA or BJ - this goes from hardline back into cool flow coming from the bottom radiator outlet.

FROM MKV R32 COOLING DIAGRAM:
1. (2 qty) of #8 in cooling diagram
2. (4 qty) of #75 in cooling diagram

Boston, WTCC cars run 2 of these additional oem water rads along with the main one and they don't have 380hp like me. I overheated the engine even at 20 deg celsius ! Didn't get to test the car really hard by now but the water temps aren't even reaching 90 now ! They stay at 78-82 even when the car was pushed a little bit harder (not at the limit because of the clutch problems I'm having at the moment)

Russian Web Sub Radiator parts catalog

Here is a good part catalog in VAG Russian (I guess) that I found.

Could be usefull.

Just wanted a heads up with the parts.

1K0 122 051 GP superceeded 1K0 122 051 BC
1K0 121 101 CB there is not such part in Americas only 1K0 121 101 CC but must be order from Germany...by your dealer.
1K0 121 156 BA I ordered this part but also exist 1K0 121 156 BJ which is WAY cheaper than BA. Don´t know if BJ will work.

found some more info, looks like some of the MKIV R32 guys were running a 6.5" spal fan on the auxiallry radiator creating around 450cfm. VF Engineering used to offer a kit for their supercharger kit.

What might be the total cost of adding the extra radiator? the new unit is relatively small compared with the main radiator, do the benefits scale linearly with radiator-size or does this allow for additional cooling performance somehow?

It's extra cooling capacity. The parts should end up costing me under $400.

I've already upgraded my radiator, added oil cooler (19 row), low temp thermostat, and G12++. So this solution makes sense for me.

daigo/fuscobal,
are you using a fender liner vent?

I was thinking of picking up this one from Autotech since they're close to me. I was considering the Audi TT MKI 1.8T vent as well, but I think I like the version below better.

All my parts arrived at the dealer, they should ship from the East Coast this week
