Hi All

This is my first post on this forum and I have done a couple of searches but can't seem to find anything. I have a 2005 mkv 1.9 TDI and seem to be having a problem with the inside rear view mirror vibrating when playing music with any sort of bass. Has anyone experienced this before and managed to fix it?

Any assistance would be much appreciated

Same problem with mine. I kept thinking it was the diffuser noise that everyone talks about. So after taking that apart and having my son put his ear up there to see where it was coming from, he said it was coming from above him. The Mirror!

Anyway, I pulled the mirror off and tightened the torx screw in the neck(which was really not loose, but I cranked down on it anyway) and re-installed it. It stayed quiet for about two weeks, then came back exactly the same about 2 days ago. So I don't know of a fix yet. I will pull it off again probably tomorrow and see what I can come up with.

I am going to install a new mirror with auto dim and homelink anyway, so I'm not too worried about it, but I still want to find a solution to the buzzing on the stock one.

Sorry I can't help you yet, but I will post if I find an answer.

So I tried again yesterday. I pulled the little metal tension piece out of the "neck" and wrapped it with electrical tape and re-installed...No luck.
Next I pulled the metal ring out from where the ball end of the neck piece connects to the mirror. I put tape around that too and re-installed...no go. (BTW I do not recommend taking that ring off, it is aMAJOR PITA to get it back on!)

The problem seems to be internal because when I flip the "dimmer" switch forward, the noise goes away. I didn't get around to opening up the mirror housing and honestly I don't know if I want to. Not sure if it is meant to be opened and I don't want to risk breaking any clips or something and not be able to bet it back together properly.

Maybe I'll try it once I order the new mirror I'm going to install. For now I just flipped the switch forward, so you might want to try that if you haven't already.

If I come up with anything else I will update.

No switch on mine, it is of the auto-dimming variety. Had the clip that that holds the stalk into the roof replaced (above the light/rain sensor) and that seems to have made the vibration less. But it definitely looks like it is actually the mirror and not the housing that is causing the vibration.

Just did a bit of searching and found this thread...looking for some advice.

I installed a GENTEX Homelink mirror in my GTI and it vibrates a bit too. When I did the install, I used the metal adapter (for the VW button).

Any ideas on how to stabilize it?

Thanks!

All car rear view mirrors will vibrate with sufficient bass, even your outside side mirrors
will too
My friends 04 jetta does too, same with my friends ms3. If it starts to make a noise with
the vibrating, turn down that bass man.

Hmmm..interesting. Thanks for the input.

I only have the stock stereo. Do you think that would put out enough bass?

Surprisingly vw's have a good stock system, well rounded, full sound. I'm stock too and i can get my mirrors to vibrate without any audio distortion.

My friends jetta has two 12"s with a slotted box and one amp and deck, all alpine. Dude, that thing slaps hard.

its just because since the gti has so sub, it has a low-bass as well as a mid-bass speaker in the same door, causing the door mirrors to vibrate, its seriously no big deal...ive yet to be in a gti that doesnt do it lol i have a land rover lr3 and that has 2 subs and 15 speakers, and it still vibrates the outside mirrors....

OK, after about 2 hours messing around with it I figured it out. Turns out the set screw was going through a hole in the "VW button" so i trimmed down a flat head screw to fit, super glued it in place and now the vibration is gone. I guess the set screw needed a bit more support.
