Winter Tires fitted. Yikes scary rear end drifting

Finally after 2.5 wks from having M+S winter tires fitted to a set of spare GTi alloys, I've had the car on the road.
Tire fitters damaged the insides if the rim (slot where weights sit) by using the wrong clamps, so they had to keep them for refurb.

Took car out today, roods wet and a little greasy due to autum leaves ec...

Yikes :yikes: compared to Conti2's, the M+S tyre was very unstable with rear end showing signs of premature break away... felt like a rally car drifting ino the corners... Also, all to easy to wheel spin in 3rd gear !

Since same size as Conti2 summer tires, kept pressures at 35psi (2.4bar).
I guess will have to wait till tires have washed off silicone coating and scrubbed in before proper grip will return. Am I correct ?? :eyebulge:

Perhaps you shouldn't have gone with a Chinese tire brand...? And gotten proper winter tires?

I seriously would not trust a tire brand that called itself "Ling Long" and basically copies tread patterns (NOT the tire compounds) from other companies.

My Dunlop snows work better on dry/wet roads than my stock dunlop A/S tires... go figure...

I ran RE01R's in the summer so... I really want those back!!!

Just fitted my set of General Tire winters on my JSW last weekend. In the dry they are pure shit.. but I expected that. The stock Conti's grip about 10x better. Braking is almost frightening. And I can completely roast them in 2nd gear when the light turns green.

No oversteer here. Instead I have nothing but understeer all day long. I have a 27mm rear sway-bar on the car, set to its firmest setting. With the conti's I can induce oversteer if I snap the wheel. I was afraid full-firm was going to be too much for winter. Based on the understeer with these tires I'm not so sure.

On the upside I expect them to actually, you know, grip in the snow. Also they have actually improved the steering response a bit. The wheel feels lighter in my hand. And I definitely think the 205/55R16's ride better than the stock 225/45R17's.

Those aren't real winter tires, you should've done some research before buying those. You have all season MUD and SNOW tires (M+S). They don't have as soft of a compound as a real winter tire like a Bridgestone Blizzak, Pirelli Winter Carving Edge, Gislaved Nord Front 5, or Nokian Hakkeplliita 5. In the road test the stopping distance for the Winterforce M+S studded was longer on ice than an un-studded Blizzak! It's all about the technology in the tire. The Blizzak is king in the winter, but if you want the absolute best it's hands down the Nokian Hakkeplliita 5 studded.

But to help your problem...

Check your tire pressures. Increase tire pressure in the front, and decrease in the rear to add understeer and decrease oversteer.
But as many people have complained the IRS on the MKV does have a tendency to oversteer especially lift off oversteer. It's easily correctable if you don't lift! Just keep applying smooth steady throttle and the weight transfer to the rear will help the tires regain traction. I know the first reaction is to go for the brakes, but that is counter-productive as it transfers more weight off the rear tires and makes the problem worse. Just remember that when you are turning keep a steady state of throttle and do your braking BEFORE the turn.

its not special.
Look for this on the sidewall:

Do they have it? If not, they are not 'Severe Service' winter tires.

FROM THE TIRE RACK WEBSITE:
What's the difference in snow traction between an M+S (Mud and Snow) branded tire, an all-season tire and a purpose-built winter/snow tire? While many drivers probably aren't absolutely sure, it can be the difference between getting to work, getting home or getting stuck.

The original definition of M+S tires is based on the geometry of the tread design. The M+S designation was first used to differentiate the knobby, bias ply tires intended for use on muddy and/or snow-covered roads from the straight rib tires used on early cars or trucks. Tires with tread designs that meet the definition may be branded with the letters "M" and "S" in several different ways (e.g., M&S, M+S, M/S, MS, etc.) at the discretion of the tire manufacturer.

When early radial ply tires were also found to deliver more snow traction than the straight rib, bias ply tires, the tire companies introduced all-season tires. Supported by advertising, all-season tires have presented an unspoken promise that they, throughout their life, can provide traction for all seasons...through spring's rain, summer's heat, fall's cooling and winter's snow. While this combined offering has made all-season tires popular, many drivers have learned that a geometric definition doesn't guarantee winter snow and ice traction.

In 1999, The U.S. Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) and the Rubber Association of Canada (RAC) agreed on a performance based standard to identify passenger and light truck tires that attain a traction index equal to, or greater than 110 (compared to a reference tire which is rated 100) during the specified American Society for Testing and Materials traction tests on packed snow. The new standard helps ensure that drivers can easily identify tires that provide a higher level of snow traction.

Severe Winter LogoA mountain/snowflake symbol branded on the tire's sidewall identifies tires that met the required performance in snow testing. The mountain/snowflake symbol is expected to be fully implemented on new tires by now, however there still may be a few winter/snow tires in the marketplace that meet the requirements but were produced in molds manufactured before the symbol was developed.

Torquey car will not help you in rain/snow.. must drive with care AND use good tires. Good luck!
