Timing belt DIY?

I've searched this forum, and no one has posted that they've done a timing belt replacement themselves. I've got tons of squeaking, and it's not from accessory belt. I'm at 45,000 miles I'd like to just do the job myself, but the Bentley calls for dropping the engine to do it. Just wondering if anyone's done it without dropping the engine, and if so, do you have any pointers or know of a DIY?

The dealership that I've have gone to in the past wants ~$1000 to replace the belt, which is only a ~$40 part itself. I hate paying mechanics and dealerships if I can do it myself (i.e. I replaced my K03 myself and saved ~$900 in labor).

Thanks for any help you can provide.

you need to either drop or lift the engine. No way around that. Its possible to do it on a jack and stands, thats how I did mine.

How many miles are you guys changing these at? I was thinking about doing it around 75-80k miles...Is that too late? I even thought that was kind of early.

I changed mine at 55k due to a unforseen incident. I wouldn't have waited much longed after that though, maybe 65-70k IMO. Plus the water pump, rollers and tensioner I swapped them all out.

i'm at 74k right now and i know this job is in my not so distant future. i haven't checked the timing belt yet but i can see some wear on the back side of the accessory belt.

as far as parts for this job.... seems like you can save alot of money on the rollers/tensioners/waterpump by getting the ECS kit which uses non OEM parts. the water pump especially looks to be exactly the same as OEM but as far as the roller/tensioner, is that generally accepted?

Noside, did you use the ECS kit?

About how many hours did this take you, Noside?

I already had to pull my engine out of the car for various reasons. Replacing the belt and tensioner etc didnt take more then 45 mins and to make sure the engine is timed correctly.
Pulling the fuel lines, coolant lines discconecting boost hoses and removing the mounts to lower the engine ID say maybe 1-1.5 hours and then the same for buttoning it all back together. so maybe a 3-4 hours job depending on how many breaks you take.

I assumed that dropping the engine was going to be necessary, but I figured it didn't hurt to ask if anyone had found a way around it. Thanks for all of the info :w00t:.

If you have an engine lift it be easier lifting it out since it has the hooks on the motor and what the bentley guide tells you to do. But I dont have one at my house so I just lowered it on two jacks and raised the car up really high lol.

Mind telling us how much the kit was at DBC? Also, I see in the DIY that there are marking for timing checks. Is this all you did for timing checks? I would also like to do this next spring, so I want to be prepped.

I've got to hand it to anyone who does this themselves. It's harder than the MKIV's. There, you could get away with just moving the motor mount.

How did the teeth in the belt in the picture get scrunched?

Yep I used the markings on the cam and crank pulley to time it. As far as the price of what I bought for the replacement I'm not sure exactly I had about $1100 worthof parts I had to replace when I went through all of this.

Long story short, I bottomed out cracked the oil pan, snapped the 2 bolts that hold the side engine mount to the block and the timing belt rode on one of the perches of the mount. Thats why it is all shreded.
some of the shavings

this is the piece on the side of the engine that goes through the timing belt cover under the belt that it was riding on.
