Found this on the web. It may be Audi only; not too sure, but it's informative none the less.

what does this mean? When in Manual over-ride mode, does the DSG revert to Drive or Sport mode by itself?
YES, reverts to D/S after ~15 seconds
NO, stays in Manual till +/Off paddle held

and

If Drive or Sport mode was overridden by the driver, having hit the shift paddles or shift knob to manually change gears, how can the 15~20 second timeout be avoided in order to resume automatic shifting immediately?
Put the shift knob in Manual mode (+/-) then back to D/S
Hit the +/Off paddle for more than 2 seconds

If you are in D or S and you hit a paddle, it will go to manual paddle shifting mode. After a few seconds, it will switch back. To immediately switch back, move the shifter to manual mode and then back to D or S.
