It can actually be activated just by vacuuming the car with enough force to trip wires under the seat. It's actually common from what I've been told. Happened to my friend and it turned off after a mile or two.

Sounds like you may not have connected the occupant sensor for the passenger seat?
If you just turn off the light, you're probably leaving your passenger at risk, as the airbag may not deploy. I'd do this properly if I were you.
