Hi guys,

Unfortunately a little while ago I lost my spare key and I'm now considering replacing it... the unfortunate part is it will cost circa $500 from VW.

I am just wondering whether there is a way to replace it via any other means at a cheaper price?

Thanks for any help!

key needs to be coded by vw. you might be able to source a key overseas but ultimately, it will need to be coded by vw.

I feel your pain. My wife lost our spare set at Callalla beach a couple of years ago. I still haven't replaced it because as Booba says, ultimately the stealership has to code it and all up that will cost $500. The key/fob is cheap, the coding isn't. If I lose the second set, all I'll have is a shiney black lump of metal, plastic and rubber in the shape of a GTI but without the functionality of one!

I know this is an older thread but I'm going to bump this.

I just bought a 08 GTI and it only came with 1 key. I called the dealership and they said it's $290 for everything; $215 for the key and the fob, and $75 to program up to 5 keys. Not bad considering what other's are reporting but I'd like to get it cheaper. Also asked if they will cut a key I bought somewhere else and they won't.

I called a locksmith and explained the situation. He sounded knowledgable on VW keys and drove one himself. He said he can program VW keys for cars up to 2005. But he said hewill cut a key that I bring them for $40 each and I would be reponsible for programing. So I'm going to buy some keys, have him cut it, and have the dealership program it.

The old links in other key thread were not valid. So my question is, where can I find decent quality keys and fobs online?

I just had to get a new key cause my car only came with one. I called around to a bunch of locksmiths, looked all over the internet and came up short. You can get the fob on ebay or here for cheap, but It's not guaranteed to work and you will still need to pay to have it cut and programmed. I ended up calling around a bunch of dealers and they all gave me different prices. I found one that ordered the key, cut it and put a new program on both keys for $275. I might have saved a few bucks buying the key on ebay and having a locksmith cut it but in the end it was a lot easier to just go to the dealer and wasn't that much more $$.

I might go with deautokey. How do I find out which key I need. I don't see any serial numbers or anything on the key. All I see is HAA on the key blade and some scribble on the opposite side of the blade that starts with H...

You can always do it yourself man. I have yet to do it with my GTI (I have though with other cars). You can get a new fob online or get transponder keys. This article should answer most of your questions: http://united-locksmith.net/blog/how-can-you-replace-a-car-key-or-remote

But yah man it is a total crock. If you let the dealership or whatever do it for you you are paying like 225% more than doing it yourself. Just find a site (there are lots of them) that sell what you need. I would look for one that has a customer support line. Some of the cars can be a little tricky (and I would think the GTI would be not exception).

Good luck...

I only had one master key when I bought my VW last year.I bought two gently used fobs off ebay for not much ($30-40 each?) and programmed with the instructions on a thread. The master key was then "cloned" by my local Lombard Locksmith for $55. They have blank keys with chips that they can program and then cut the actual key part. Worked out better than I thought it would and I didn't have to deal with the Stealership who wanted $400 for one fob and key.

Immo off and you only need the key part. Plenty of people online will do that for cheap.

I have 2 keys from my 2008.5 GTI I can sell if anyone wants them. You would need new key blades but those are cheap. I traded in my MKV for a MKV so I don't need it anymore.

Thanks for the suggestion, but they're not the right ones unfortunately.Believe me I've spent a good while trawling ebay,Amazon,Google et al. and there are hundreds of suppliers for similar looking fobs, but unfortunately they're not the right one. I bought a couple just to be sure, but they're slightly too small and not quite the right shape. Then i contact Locksmith Coral Springs for the problem and they provide apt solution.

Yes! Dealers are always on the high side and sometimes they cannot get it done or you have to wait for hours or in some cases days.

Your best solution is to search for an automotive locksmith specialist. Many locksmiths do not have the tools or know how, but the ones that do, can come to you and get it done for almost half the cost. We work on VW's and the average price for these jobs is $250-$300

Hi guys,
I'm new to VW and this forum. I apologize in advance for my ignorance, but I am in need of a key as well, if not 2. I just purchased a 2008 GTI that came with one really beat up key. My first question is how to I know what generation car I have. From what research I've done, it looks like the 2008 year overlaps in the MKV and MK6 gens. Can anyone help identify what I have? So my second question, is, do the different generations have different keys or are they all for the most part the same. Like most others, I've checked eBay and Amazon and all, and have seen keys that look like my existing key, but I want to be sure to get the right one. Again, my apologies for my newbie ignorance. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
