Knocking, kicking gear change when warm (2nd to 3rd gear)

Hi all,

I am a new member here. I have a Golf Rabbit 2005 (1.6 engine) with a full GTI body.

I am facing an issue with my gearbox. When the car is cold, there is no problem, but when it gets warm, the gearbox is hitting or kicking while switching from 2nd to 3rd gear or vice-versa. My gearbox is a 6-Speed Automatic/Tiptronic. (PRNDS +-). When driving it on the tiptronic gear, i don't face this problem.

NB: There is no gear slipping. Everything is fine, no lights on the dashboard, engine oil recently changed. Everything is maintained, no mechanical or electrical failures.

I want to know, as of your experience, what may be the cause and why it is only kicking when the car is warm and only on the 2nd-3rd gear switch. This problem is more than 1 year old.

:help:

Thank you,
Great forum, keep it up!

thanks for the reply donjuan1jr

so i need to replace it? or it may get a cheap fix?
and do you have any idea how much does it cost?
I'll take it to an expert soon.

Prices for a valve body can vary depending on model but u can expect in the 800-1200 USD range. If your specialist can source parts for the valve body(really hard) you could fix your issue. It's most likely a faulty solenoid or built up clog inside the valve body/spool valve sticking. Since you say it doesn't do it on top mode you can isolate which solenoid and circuit would be the issue. As a VW tech we never fixed these things we just replaced the valve body.

But have someone look at it it could be a few other things but I'm doubtful.

The car faces some hesitations when it is on low rpm (1500-3000), and this is causing the knocking to be heavier when switching gears. I am thinking maybe these hesitations could be the cause (no synchronization with the speed of the motor and the turn of the gear), and when the rpm reaches 4000-5000 there is a ticking sound that is heard (starting 2nd gear)
Could a faulty spark plug be the cause of the problem?
Or is the ticking sound caused by another thing?
I've searched a lot on the net, but no one has a similar case.

Thank you for your cooperation! you're the best

First off, hi there! I'm new here too. Been scraping for forums for a couple of years though.

Secondly; you said Rabbit? No turbo, correct? I blew a DV once and felt the same hesitation and clunking when on manual mode (DSG).
Also, what kind of ticking sound? Is it the same ticking you get as the engine is running normally, only louder?

Hello ShadowSplicer,

Yes it has a 1.6 engine so no turbo.
But in my case the hesitation is felt on both automatic and DSG modes on low RPMs.
The ticking sound appears when the RPM is between 4500 - 5000 (from the 2nd gear and going up), it is like a sound of a spark plug (6-7 ticks per second)
It is not the same engine sound. there is a noticeable ticking, that i think is taking of the engine power.

Thanks for helping and sharing your experience :)

Note: when the car is on neutral mode, there is no ticking while RPM reaches 4500.
Any idea about this ticking noise?

Any suggestions?

When was the last transmission fluid change done? I got my DSG flushed a few days ago, and it made a HUGE difference in bucking and my trans now makes less noise. Fluid wasn't even fully dirty yet, either.

Do you have Vagcom? Or an OBD scanner? Or even a Bluetooth OBD connector? I'd suggest at least getting a BT one so you can pull codes and check out your system via an app like Torque.

Ohh I don't remember the last time i changed the transmission fluid, it was so long ago, so i need to try flushing it.
I ordered an OBDII scanner and I am waiting for delivery.

May oil flushing cause transmission slip ?
I will let you know what will happen.

Thank you.

I think your transmission is AISIN 09G, which is not DSG, and those AISIN transmissions have a common problem in valve body, I had faced this issue in my VW Passat B6 2007, Skoda Octavia 2008.
Tried to repair valve bodies without success in both cars, better to replace valve body with a new or used one from 2009+ which has an enhanced VB, a new bigger transmission fluid cooler will save you a lot in future.

thank you for the reply Farisidrees,
the mechanic will check it at the end of this week.
do you have an idea on the cost of the valve body here ?
