Ethanol Blending

Isn't it just simple percentages?

If you want an e20 blend of 5 gallons of fuel it would be 4 gallons pump and 1 gallon e85...

If you look at the calculator that I posted on Google Docs, the way I did it was to assume 5.9% ethanol in our pump fuel and 85% of the E85, then add the ethanol volumes to get the total volume of ethanol and divided this by the tank size (14.5 gallons) and converted to a % by multiplying by 100. :headbang:

Check the calculator out all you want, but if you can try to leave the values normal or what they were so if someone else checks it out it will makes sense. :paddle:

I wasn't taking into account the 15% of gasoline in e85. I'm an idiot :sm3:

Haha. Nah man it gave me a headache to get it sorted out.

Yeah, there are a few assumptions but it should be pretty accurate.

Just wanted to post an update.

Despite the unknowns in doing this my buddy has ran multiple tanks of E85 blend (2.75 gallons E85 / 93 octane) in his stage 2 TSI mkv in APR 100 mode without any problems.

Ran about a 50/50 mix of e85 and 93 on the way to h20 running the APR 100 file. Fuel cuts galore on the highway at full throttle, But 1-3rd gears around OC it pulled like a monster. No issues with normal driveability either. No misfires or codes. Only issue was the 5-6mpg less

Yeah part-throttle isn't a problem lol.

Just curious, did you seafoam the fuel system before using E85 when you first started? I'm wondering if it's necessary to do that on mixes or if it's only necessary when running 100%.

I found something very important information regarding our ethanol mixture calculations.

Using Junkers calculator
We have been using 85% ethanol for our calculations but that varies greatly depending on your location and season. I found the information on the amount on ethanol in your specific "E85". Turns out in my part of NY E85 is actually E85 only during July.

There are three volatility classes for ethanol (designated 1, 2, and 3). Class 1 is summertime E85, and needs to have a minimum of 79 percent ethanol (so even E85 doesn't have to be E85). Class 2's ethanol minimum is 74. And Class 3, wintertime ethanol, is 70 percent. In some parts of the country, Wyoming, for example, Class 3 is sold from October through May and Class 1 is sold only in July and August. You can find what fuel is sold when in your state in the the Department of Energy's "Handbook for Handling, Storing and Dispensing E85" in Appendix A

Quick update.

I just finished up a tank of 3.75 gallons of E85 (see above post- my E85 could be as low as 70%).

The car ran amazing and was the fastest and smoothest its ever been. I have a TSI with APR software. I put a bottle of lucas oil in the tank, so that might explain the smoothness.

Fuel trims looked okay?

I need to baseline the trims with the TwinTake now that I am back from vacation to see how much E85 I can get away with while keeping it under 20%.

I have not logged anything yet. I thought if they were to far out of line the ECU would switch to the component protection tables.

As far as I know from seeing APR logs on golfmk6 the APR file runs rich and the fuel system can keep up. APR said that when the EGT get above a certain temp component protection kicks in.
