Cruise Control Not Working
I tried bumping an old thread with not much help so I'd thought I'd post in the DIY as I'm looking for some help...
My cruise stopped working recently. It happened once before about a year ago; the switch wouldn't turn on my green cruise light. After turning the car off and back on, it started working again. Now, it doesn't work at all. Also, I have an APR tune that I cannot switch programs. I've read that the stalk goes bad, but I haven't really had a confirmation of that. I can't even find a replacement part on ECS, so is this something that I need to have the dealer do? Any help or even an idea of what this costs at the dealer would be appreciated.

I had this same thing around 2 years ago. It more or less fixed itself but might have been fixed by unplugging and replugging the battery when doing something else. Cant say for sure.

I had the same issue where the cruise control wouldn't work but then I turn off the car and on again and it would work. I had the stalk replaced before my bumper to bumper ended and it seems to work now but I can't say a 100% that the stalk was the issue.

I just had this problem recently. My cruise control stoped working and so did my brake lights. It ended up being my brake light switch. Most are located at the top of the brake pedal arm. But mine was located on the left side of my master cylinder (2006 GTI). Hope this helps you out.

Get your DTCs read first. Before that, everything is just guess work.
Could be one of the switches on one of the pedals or the stalk itself.

Would not be surprised if your stalk is failing.
Intermittent operation is not uncommon as they go bad. I use the turn signals religously and am a bit ham fisted at times, so I expect my stalk to fail eventually. My mk5 is the first car I have ever owned where the turn signal stock hasn't failed (yet), at 185,000+ miles now. I was so convinced the stalk failure trend would continue I bought a replacement from a part out couple of years ago. I have a 2006 with the separate cruise control stalk ![]() Since I have a spare on hand, I suspect that is why it hasn't failed, no complaints.

Mine is all integrated. I can get a new stalk for around $100 but I'm not thrilled about throwing $100 at a chance of fixing it. I will at some point I'm sure.

Like I said, no point in throwing money in any direction untill you have had your DRCs read. The clutch and brake pedal switches cost only a 20-40USD each and are easy to replace.

Might be the connections inside drying up. I'll dig the link out about sorting it when I get home.

Sorry for the delay. Althought the link is in Danish you'll get a pretty good idea from all the pictures, and google does a fair enough translation if you still want it. Just remember to use contact cleaner.

I would suspect this makes sense for certain types of cruise control. For mine, the cruise light is on whenever the switch is on, not only when cruise is being activated. I don't think this would be the fix for me.

Probably a different cause in terms of cruise not working, but mine doesnt work either. I went to the dealer and they quoted me $450 to replace the relay/stalk. I opted for the screw you and walk out method. So I am fortunately stuck in 93 oct mode for my apr tune

Thought you guys would be interested to know that I followed the instructions in fishy's link above to dismantle and clean the cc unite in the stock. I've been having cc issues for roughly 6 months now. Light engages but then cuts off or most of the time it doesn't work at all. After cleaning, everything seems to be working perfectly. I'll post updates if anything changes. 07 bpy manual GTI. Once again thank you to the MKV forum and all the dubbers. Without you guys I'd be dead broke and still clueless about this racecar that I am so fond of.

Right after APR finished stage 1, guy told me to enter the code to select program. Turned car off then on and cruise was finicky: code wouldn't take. So now I'm locked in 91 and need my cc checked. And has anyone heard the valet mode cannot be installed because the type of ECU the vehicle has?

The contacts were actually quite dirty, and the whole process didn't take long at all. I guess its back to the drawing board. Any other ideas out there?

Get your DTCs read. Quite possibly a sensor fault.

My cruise control stopped working for about a year. i tried replacing both brake light bulbs thinking whatever i had in there might not have been right, but that didn't work. So, thinking the brake switch may be sticking (but mostly out of frustration), I started kicking on the brake pedal sideways, like left to right on the side of the pedal. Switched it on and BINGO it started working again!
So I'm assuming something in the brake switch is sticking, but not so much that the brake lights malfunction. They've always worked the way they should. Wondering if a little WD-40 might help it work better. |
