Document problems before warranty's over.

I went to my dealer yesterday to book a service to check for couple issues before my mileage reaches 80K KM. I am actually two hundred KMs short of that and my appointment is next week.

I asked them if they could write down the mileage so when I come back next week and if I go over 80K, I would still be covered for those problems. The service advisor told me that Volkswagen doesn't do this. I was surprised because I know BMW and Toyota do this.

Sounds like a dickhead dealership, most dealerships would do that for you

I don't know any. I believe they all need to include a scan from the ECU, which reports the mileage and VIN, if they want to be reimbursed.

I was told that Volkswagen does not do this doesn't matter when your appointment is. The warranty mileage will be at the time that you bring your car in and the work order is created. I am going to call VW on Monday just to ask.

So I went back to the dealer today for the appointment and they found one of the window switches to be broken.

So they are going to order it and will probably take a week and in the mean time I was told not to go over 80K or else I would have to pay for the part and the labor!

Can you believe this!!!

Total BS. Ask them this - if you brought your car in at 59,999.9 miles, and you needed a whole new transmission, does that mean they won't test drive it?

I was so pissed today about it, I contacted Volkswagen Canada's customer relations line. I was told that the dealer should open a work order on the day that the problem is diagnosed(not when the part comes in) and the warranty would be based on the mileage on the work order. VW told me to communicate this information to the dealer so they are aware of these situations in the future.

I guess this dealer creates the work order when the part comes in and ready to install, anyways, I'm cancelling the appointment and going to a different dealer. I am going to speak to the service manager tomorrow and I actually asked another service advisor about it and he gave me the same answer "that's how VW Canada works"

Like I said before, many dealers(not sure about VW dealers) would actually record your mileage on the day that you report the problems and when you come in for your appointment, if the problems found were the ones that you reported during the warranty, they will still fix it free of charge.

Sounds like your ass dealership is trying to show a lower turnaround time on repairs, but in this case, they're doing so illegitimately on the backs of their customers. Call them out on this. Tell VWoC that you think they're doing this, and that other customers may be harmed by this.

Holy crap, I was just at the dealer and asked them about this since they took care of me a while ago before my warranty expired. They said this exact thing, most likely your dealership hasn't been holding up to VW standards on turn around time. VWOA has strict standards (so I assume so does VWoC), and if a dealership doesn't hold up to them they boot them out of the network real quick. Happened to one out here a couple of years ago.

Dealerships are allowed to "lie" to a certain extent of the mileage on the vehicle, manufacturers allow it for customer satisfaction. This is known as a goodwill repair. If you go over by mileage slightly and they wont cover it, go to another dealer.

So I emailed a letter to both the service manager and the general manager about the issue and has been more than two days and still nothing from them. I guess I will call VW Canada, I bet they are doing that to a lot of other customers. Anyways, I found another dealer (VW and Audi combined) near my house and they seemed to be much nicer.

So I guess this is how VW works. I can't drive over 80K while the part is on order doesn't matter how long it is going to take. Learned something new today.

Just got a reply from VW:

Volkswagen Canada does not allow Volkswagen dealerships to leave a work order open if the vehicle is not in the possession of the dealership. Work orders remain open only for the duration of time where a vehicle is in the possession of the dealership in order to ensure accurate reporting of the necessary repair, odometer reading and time that the vehicle was with the dealership.

Again, your dealership is to blame, not VW. And your letter from VW states just that: The dealership should not have released the car to you until diagnosed repairs were completed. Continue to communicate with VWoC that you were under the impression that it was a waranted repair, and that the dealership violated VW policy, and as such, put the financial burden on you, VW's customer.

If the dealership did not record the mileage at the initial service in which they diagnosed the problem, that is a further complaint.
