Dealer says... no leaks, nothing wrong with PCV, 3-4qts/5k miles = working as designed. Needless to say, I was not happy with that answer. So, they said come back in 1k and they will get a consumption test going.

This deal with crazy ass oil consumption is really putting a dent in my overall GTI enjoyment.

That got me thinking... with this much maintenance, how do these cars ever hope to survive your average female driver?

I'm still very proud of my wife for learning to operate the self service gas pump and all. However, she would totally destroy this car if this was her daily driver.

I assume I'll have to cover part+labor costs. Any idea how much that would be?

I'm stock, and my PCV went, replaced under warranty, !

Oil is 5-40 whatever brand dealers use now.

Dealer said my PCV is good... my idle is solid, no whooshing noises.

So, im 500 miles into my consumption test... current oil level is exactly in the middle of normal now.

At the rate its going, I will be over 1 qrt/1k.

I shudder to think what happens when these cars get modded.

I have my hands full with this thing stock.

ok...sooo 500 miles and you're already down to halfway. Big problem my man....are you sure there are no leaks around the oil filter? Cam head gasket???

take it back before the 1000 miles and tell them this thing is waaaaay too thirsty.

I don't run my motor below the half mark.... the FSI is too risky to risk.

Clean all around, nothing on ground... ever. Dealer confirms, no leaks.

They said run it until light comes on. I doubt it can get that low in 1k miles since light comes on if you're 2qrt+ low. They said do not add oil. I'm happy to burn this bitch down on their say so.

This is gona be another fucking crusade on my part... I know it. As of my last visit, they are sticking to their 1,200 miles/quart bullshit. Even handed me a brochure stating this... very formal... nice illustrations.

imo, this isnt too unusual. i go through a qt of 5-40 every 1.5k with updated pcv running the apr 93 file. Funny thing about it though is that my 240,000 mile gmc jimmy only eats 1 qt every 3k. i dont get it

Ok so I've had my oil consumption test done today. 2/3qrt/1k is what they are saying. Which happens to be well within spec according to the dealer. Bit disappointing but not unexpected. More importantly, I realized that this dealer sucks hairy balls. I will definitely pick this up again at my next oil change which will be at a different dealer no doubt. Not sure what to do about this in the mean time.

Oh, and they also mentioned that my PCV is fine... Somehow, I doubt they ever looked at it though. Perhaps their definition of "fine" simply means - not currently engulfed in flames...

I'm pretty sure a bad PCV valve would throw codes, but I'm open to correction on that. If I'm right though, then they probably just checked for codes, and if they found none, then pronounced your PCV as healthy.

That kind of oil consumption sucks ass though. I mean, I used to drive a Crown Vic that ate a litre of oil every tank, and I had to get rid of it because it wouldn't pass emissions. How is it that a brand new car can be almost as bad?

Deff go out and have it looked by another dealer. I had a problem before and the dealer i went tried to help syk no they didnt so I went to Douglas VW in Summit NJ, by far the one of the best service dealers they really worked on my car and made me feel secure about there work they have done to it. Id really reccomend them and your not that far

yea wtf time for a new dealer. They told you to run it until the low oil light comes on ? that doesn't sound like good advice to me. i saw that light/warning once, it scared the shit out of me, that's when i realized i needed a spare quart of oil in my trunk at all times.

I'm just going to get that PCV done out of pocket for now. What is it going to cost, $100 give or take? Purely because I don't have the time to be showing these dealers noses into shit until they get it.

Douglas VW is close enough. Problem is, I would have to kill a day off or get a rental since they are about 30 miles south of my work place. Will definately bring my own oil next oil change tho.

But not today... since today I needed to drop of my wife's Nissan for service.

+1

i add 1qt roughly half way through to the next service, approx 4000kms.

LOL 10W-40. Thats diesel oil. If you are in a 'cold climate', you better hope that was at least synthetic, or bye-bye turbo seals.

I have an '07 GTI and there was a TSB on the PCV, indicating that the dealer should change it to the newest version when the car was in for service. If there was a similar TSB for the '08s they should do it for free, since there was a problem with the earlier PCV's.

Here is the link to the TSB for the PCV on the 07's. Don't know if would apply to your car, but it tells you what to look for.

It is fairly easy to check the PCV and also does cause some oil consumption issues. It will not be covered under warranty unless faulty though. I believe the allowable oil consumption is something crazy like one quart every 600 miles. Personally that is ridiculous. I have squeaked a few ring jobs through under warranty on that engine and the customers never used a drop of oil since. Most of those engines were early ones though. On a newer vehicle I would be looking at PCV, turbo, etc. being the cause. Try checking intercooler piping for excessive oil. But, the as previously stated allowable oil consumption is what VW stands by for warranty repairs. Also, once an oil consumption test is performed dealers are not permitted to perform another oil consumption test under warranty for either 6 months or 1 year - I forget which (unless recently changed).
