Suddenly my FSI goes oil hungry

Long story short... It looks like I'm down 2 quarts 3500 miles into last oil change.

Now, I know what VW position on this is. My question is, should I be looking for some underlying cause that may be responsible for this sudden shift? Or do these things just come and go at their own accord?

My GTI is a '08 FSI with 13.5k miles on it. I never had ANY oil consumption before. All of a sudden I get this...

I've read that a faulty PCV can cause excess oil consumption, but then again Im not modded and my understanding is that it mostly causes trouble in cars pushing 20+psi.

Once thing I did notice... my dealer put in 10-40 at the last oil change. Isnt that a bit odd?

Check your PCV, I think there's DIYs on here somewhere, even stock I think they can go bad. Should be 5w-40, but I have the entire spec list of recommended oils from VW/Audi at home and sometimes it depends on the brand.

I would look into replacing the PCV with the new revision. Sounds like your's is on it's way out.

Can I just ask the dealer for latest rev PCV? Assuming they say that theres nothing wrong with the current one which is a good bet unless it happens to be lying on the ground and/or is on fire when they examine it...

I assume I'll have to cover part+labor costs. Any idea how much that would be?

1 qt every 1200 miles is a little excessive....

take it in... tell em to fill ' er up... and ask for a consumption test.

I wouldn't classify it as too odd.

My old 2.0 FSI one service interval, used enough oil that the Check Oil light came on and I had to top her up.

But every interval after that and before she didn't use any oil at all, it was a bit odd. But it's not unheard of.

1 quart every other 3K miles is kind of normal.

I've read enough on the topic of oil consumption to know that VW considers it to be perfectly normal for these cars to go through about 1 quart/1000 miles and I'm fine with that.

I guess what troubles me is the fact that I went from 0 to 2 quarts and I'm not even up to the 5k mark on this oil change.

Unless I'm totaly off, to me that signals that something may have changed.

If it burned oil from the start, or started to burn a little oil and gradually got worse, then I would say it's probably nothing you can fix. But, to go from 0 to suddenly a lot, says to me something is wrong.

Agreed. Not all FSI/TSI engines consume that much oil, and yours apparently didn't start until recently. I would spend a few $$ and change the PCV, regardless of whether the dealer will cover it under warranty.

Consider the intake valve deposit issues with DI engines too (I'm assuming you've read one of the many threads). If the PCV is at fault for your oil consumption, you'll also be building valve deposits at an accelerated rate.

It sounds like it would be prudent to get my PCV to the latest rev one way or another.

However, my understanding is that going to latest rev PCV will not prevent another possible future PCV failute.

I've noticed that there are a number of aftermaket PCV fixes out there from Forge, Eurojet etc.

Are these tolerated/endorsed by the dealers? My car is fairly new and I'm kind of attached to the idea of having a warranty. Can I do some preventive mods that wont cause me warranty headaches?

I did read about valve deposits on DI engines. My understanding is that its the nature of the beast and that theres little I can do about it. Except maybe perform an "Italian Tuneup" once in a while.

using 0w-40 M1 is not overkill... I use it, and it's one of the more affordable full syn oils.... and my FSI does drink half qt every 2k miles...

however, our engines tend to demolish M1 0w-40 by 5k miles.... so no letting it stick around...

Sadly, I'm unable to locate my copy. I did contact my dealer and they say that according to their records, I got 5w40 in there.

Since I'm not much into conspiracy theories these days, I'm forced to conclude that I may have been mistaken about that 10w40 part.
