Thanks and sorry Joe - publicly at least gets a response within a day rather than silence for a month. I appreciate your best instentions.

However, it was YOUR advice to send it back and get me a unit that worked and had all the bugs ironed out. Remember - we are now THREE MONTHS down the line.

Whatever unit you send, if it doesn't work, I can't afford to send it back, so it had better work - anything would be better than where we are now. Put simply, I want a perfectly working unit (suitable for the UK!).

Please send what you like - it is (and always has been) up to you. You have address details so please send as soon as possible. If it doesn't work then tough on me I suppose. I would prefer a new unit if possible as that was what was promised - otherwise I would not have bothered with the hassle of sending it back.

Battery Drain Issue Solution

It has been more than 10 days since I've tested a solution in 4 cars that had the battery issue problem, I guess it's time to share with you how it works being the fact that none of these cars had the leak.

Myself and a group of guys from a Jetta/Passat Club in Argentina (http://www.jetta-passatclub.com) bought 10 units from Witson and we verified that 5 out of 10 had the battery drain issue.
Witson offered their warranty only if we place a new order. Unbelievable !
A chunk of these units went out to the market and had this fault when connected in a car with Can Gateway 1K0 907 530 L or newer than L.
So we bought 5 Can modules for the units from Witson, we asked them for the new ones, the ones that are being installed on the mk4's but they sent us the same old modules. After changing it fault was not fixed as you can imagine.

Anyway, due to lack of Wiston support in any way, I did some research myself and observed that measuring the total current consumption with the car closed and locked (also the hood) the value was 680mA. Then measuring the consumption of the unit itself was very low. That gave me the idea the current drain can be achieved to the Can Gateway querying the unit and not being able to detect it, that process goes on and on.

The solution was to use a small 12V relay to interrupt the CAN Hi cable from the unit (orange color) to avoid that situation. The idea is to keep connected the orange cable when the ignition key is in position 1 or 2 and interrupted when key it's in position 0, out or the car locked.
To do that the way to power the relay goes like this: one end of the relay coil needs to be connected to ground (black cable) and the other end can be connected either to the lighter or if your car has climatronic you can use the green/black cable at the rightmost on the climatronic connector.
By doing this the total current dropped to a value of 20-30 mA which solves the problem.

Hope this helps

Well done.

I dont have that issue but have also been thinking that by using a VCDS (vagcom) cable you may be able to remove the radio from the canbus search.

Alex can you please post a DIY with pictures for all the steps? I am sure it will help all of us who don't have technical background

Bazzle,

tried that option, but once the radio is removed from the list via VCDS the unit cannot be turned on :-(

Here is a pic with instructions. Have no pics of the climatronic to show where to connect the +12V of the relay if wanted to be used instead of the lighter contact which is not as close as the climatronic wire.

sorry for the extremely noob question but where can you get the relay from? and will doing this diy cause any problems if there actually isn't a battery drain?

Relay can be found in a regular electronic component shop, it's a very common relay. By doing this won't change anything if you don't have the problem but there are a few checks you can do to save some work.

1 - Since you installed the unit, have you ever left the car sited for a couple of days ? if after that engine started then it seems that you don't have that issue.

2- If you can read the Can Getway version with VAG/VCDS look for the ending letter of the code, if it's L or higher it's very likely you'll see the battery draining

3- You can do a current measurement also. Insert the Amp meter in series with the positive terminal of the batery. Lock the hood lever and then the car with the remote control, this will speed up the shutting down process. After 3 minutes or so, the current should drop to a 20-40 mA, if you see values going from 650 mA - 700 mA then there's a leakage of current.

sorry for the extremely noob question but where can you get the relay from? and will doing this diy cause any problems if there actually isn't a battery drain?

Is Unit working without igniton - with this scheme?

I can confirm this scheme is working. I just soldered a cable by myself and all radios functions are working just fine- including canbus decoding.

upper line in the power plug: orange.... brown.... blue.... yellow
lower line of the power plug:eek:range/white.... red.... pink.... black

the brown wire must be connected to ground (black wire) to watch dvd while car in motion (tv-free function)

Find your needed pins in this pic of a quadlock connector.

If you connect with canbus you need neither red wire (power only when ignition on) nor pink wire (light). That means on/off and light are switched by canbus signals. The canbus also switches on your reversecam.

Hello, I'm new in this forum, I got my Unit 10 days ago - everything works fine (I'think) I dont know if I have Battery drain issue I need my Car every Day, It is a Skoda Ocatvia II (2006) by the way.

My Question: Is it possible, with the scheme you mentioned, that the unit is working without igniton an CAN-Bus is still working (rear camera etc.)? Because when I switch off my Ignition the Unit is off an I'm not able switch it on untill I switch on my Ignition too.

By the Way, is my Unit MK4? - it has got an USB Wire for the back with a blue plug to connect to the Unit.

Thanks for your answers. (apologize for my poor English)
