It's really easy to take off. Just find a credit card or a old blockbuster card would probably work the best slide it in the black plastic slot. it will remove the chrome emblem and black backing and then the chrome unclips from the backing. paint the two and put it back on with some 3M tape. There is a thread that shows how to do it with pictures. I just did it earlier this week and if you use Plasti-dip then you can take it off if you don't like it.

you and i both have 08s. I tried to do mine today and all i got was the clip off. IM pretty sure on the 08 all that comes off is the chrome clip from the black backing. May want to just take that off, plasti dip it and re install. Im thinking ill go for that after i figure out the plasti process

I was just about to post this exact finding. I found this out tonight when my friend who has a 09 tried to take his off and we found out it's just clips. which in my opinion is much better. The clips on my 07 were hard to get off without breaking. He just taped off the black backing and plastidiped it red and then plastidipped the vw black. I'll txt him right now and tell him to put the pictures up.

Sweet. Ok so its official. 08s have a different setup with the rear emblem. Yea i want to see how his plastidipped emblem came out so i can decide if i want to go with this on my bmp. thanks

Why plastidip the rear when you could paint it? I understand the front because of rock chips, but the rear looks better painted. I've done both because I got wax on the plastidip the first time and it doesn't come out.

Just get your credit card in there and go for it. Don't break it though - I hear they're expensive...

well i have no clue which looks better. Im reading that most people do the plasti dip for the process. post pics of your painted emblem.

Ok so here are some pics of it taped off and of the finished product. Plastidip is very easy. Go to the store. Buy it. Clean the area you are dipping. Spray it, let it dry, spray it, let it dry. I usually do 3 coats like that and then put it back on. It's super easy.

On to the pics.

Check out 'goingfast.com' They were a vendor at waterfest this year and they have some great stuff (already picked up a badge from them). They have a trunk hatch that's prepainted back for a decent price. You can keep your stock emblem and swap back if you change your mind on the look.
