Maybe that's why it's called a reversing camera!

Is it the camera or head unit software (or both) that is capable of reversing the image? Could check by plugging the camera into another display (ie. a TV). Maybe there's nothing wrong with the camera(s) and it's the head unit (or a glitch in it's software)? I seem to remember a post ages ago about being able to reverse the image in the software?
yes ... I laughed to...albeit briefly.

I have tried to correct the image using the available software, but it doesn't do any good.

I am really getting suspicious of where we have located it. Although I don't think the heat is an issue, maybe the vibration from the exhausts is upsetting the equipment.

Wonder how much a rear valance is for an R32? Hmmm...can someone say Carbon Fibre?

Might have to try the camera with another unit.....but I really do think the location is the problem. Bugger.:iono:

Some camera's have a small grub screw on the back which you rotate to (horizontally) reverse the image. Does the camera in question have one of these? Your ridiculously raspy exhaust note isn't vibrating this around is it?

I doubt that you will still have MDF control. You will have the left side of the steering wheel function but not through the MDF, least that what I would expect anyway.

Steve, tis your flapper valve mod killing the camera lol :fighting0030:

Confession

I have a confession to make. I have taken one for the team. I have just made payment for a Waywell WD6050 direct from the manufacturer.

Prices are:

US$380 for the unit including GPS
US$10 for Australian maps (don't know which type - I know nothing about GPS)
US$60 to be sent to Perth by DHL.
US$22 to use Paypal (5% of total cost - my bank charges near enough to the same for an international transfer directly into their account, other option is Western Union).

Total US$472, which at todays Paypal rate was AU$700.

The reasons for just ordering directly and pulling out of the group buy are:

1. I think the cost of import duty/GST if several are imported together will outway the discount in price/freight.

2. No-one has really said they are organising a group buy yet, it's more just people saying they're in if someone else organises it (I'm guilty of this too). I want it sometime this century.

3. I want to buy it at a price I am happy with now, before someone sets themselves up as the Australian distributor and the price goes up accordingly. Not having a go at anyone by saying this, I understand the costs of running a small business in Australia, having done it before myself - just saying I'd rather get it now while it's cheap.

The upside for everybody else is that if you're risk adverse, I'll be the guinea pig. So far everyone from WA that has expressed an interest I have already met, so I'm quite happy for any of you to give mine the once over before ordering your own if you want. Pair your own phone, play your own iPod and bugger up my GPS! Eastern states folks, I'll be sure to let every one know how it goes. DHL, so I would expect it early next week...

mrx, u coulda saved yourself $10 by not bothering getting Aussie maps ;) There again be cheap if it comes supplied on a 2gb SDcard :) If it is running winCE5.0 or better then you can use several different GPS packages, if you need help with them yell out, I would also appreciate having a look see at your unit and it should be a peice of piss to install. Did you get any confirmation about what comes supplied with the unit, GPS antenna/remote control etc ? I'd also seriously consider fitting the GPS antenna on TOP of the dash rather than under the top vent as suggested elsewhere, you WILL notice a difference believe me, been there and done that, only takes a few extra minutes during install to route the cable down through one of the windscreen air vents. Lots of WA users have the AVC9000 installed, I have one in the Jetta, will wait and see how this turns out before ordering for the GTI.

Cheers

whoah, nice one!
All very solid reasons IMO.
I look forward to seeing it up and running.
Even ordered in pairs I think we'd be lucky to dodge GST/Duty.

Looks like even in China they celebrate Western New Year, So the unit won't be shipped until Monday.

what I am most interested in with this Waywell unit is if the screen brightness is any better than the Auspack unit. My Auspac works well apart from the screen being difficult to read in direct sunlight. Its partly the fault of the dash design angling up slightly.

I'm also mucking around with TomTom V7 with limited success, having problems getting it to recognise the ver7 maps is all, will nut it out over tomorrow no doubt :)
:)

Hi timj,

I have recently purchased a brand new AVC9000 and installed on my Golf GTI V5 with success... apart from running TomTom V7 and its updated maps. :iono:

Did you succeeded in finding a good solution to the "No maps found" issue??

If so, please, can you explain exactly what can I do to let this GPS software works properly?

Thank you in advance for your courtesy and kind attention.

Hello all,

Great thread! It's been a valuable source of information for me, being that I'm in the USA and purchased the Witson D720V/AVC-9000 on ebay. With the help of this thread I've been able to get IGO 8.3 with the latest US maps and Dimka skin working, as well as the latest WolfNCU desktop running with various skins. Overall I'm quite happy.

Hopefully I'll be able to contribute back to this thread's usefulness... I have two files sent to me from "Bob" at Witson that other's may also find handy.

Once my unit arrived and I'd installed it, I was testing out all the functions and getting familiar with the unit's operation. To my horror, I found that on the GPS OS side of things, there wasn't a VW logo but instead a huge "NISSAN" logo

I emailed Bob at Witson, who responded the next day. He sent a firmware update and said it would fix the Nissan logo. I believe something was lost in translation as it seems he was under the impression I had a Nissan logo displaying on the iPod/DVD/Radio side of the operating system. His firmware update flashed fine, but did not address the Nissan logo on the GPS function.

I replied back to him with a screen shot and he immediately knew what I was trying to accomplish. He sent a sysupdater.exe file to me along with text instructions, a new .bmp file and even an .mp4 video that showed how to update the logo. He also mentioned that he actually had another system update but warned against using it unless there were major problems with the unit -- I wasn't able to gather if he meant he had another executable that could be run or if he had a newer firmware. I've responded to him and I'm awaiting his reply. I'll post an update when I hear back from him.

Both the firmware update and the sysupdater.exe are available at rapidshare:

http://rapidshare.com/files/179565872/D720V_Firmware.rar

http://rapidshare.com/files/179565873/D720V_Logo_Updater.zip

Bob's .bmp logo replacement was a simple blue background with white text, and while it admittedly was better than a Nissan graphic, I decided to do some experimenting on my own. I found that the restrictions for getting a properly displayed bitmap require that the image be 400x234 and saved as a 16bit image (higher color resolution can be uploaded but won't be displayed correctly).

I believe it was OzDJ that posted som R32 backgrounds a while ago, so I grabbed one, cropped it down and saved it as 16bit color (it's included in the rar file). It's currently my D720V's GPS splash screen, though I'll soon change this as I own a Jetta TDI

My hopes are that somebody more knowledgeable than I will be able to make better use of the sysupdater.exe than simply changing logos. If you download and run it, you'll see that there are what appears to be several other options available. Some of these include "OS" and "Boot" -- my assumption being that these options can be updated in a similar manner to the logos. Earlier in this thread there was interest in doing some firmware/resource hacking on our units, I'm thinking this tool could come in handy for that.

Ok, so... I do have a couple of questions regarding these units:

1) When I turn on the unit I see a blue screen for 1-2 seconds until it switches to either iPod or Radio mode. Is this normal, or should I be seeing a VW boot splash?

2) Where can I purchase a backup camera? Mine did not come with a camera or TV antenna. In the USA, OTA TV signals will be replaced with HD signals in February 2009 so I really don't care about TV and wouldn't watch it in the car anyhow. I would like to get a backup camera installed though.

3) Has AM radio reception been resolved with a dual fakra to ISO adapter? I read earlier about the Active Phantom Antenna, but wasn't able to pin down reports on whether or not this would solve our issue. I would like to get both FM and AM reception working.

Thanks!

Yeah, I figured I was really just paying for the SD card anyway at that price?! I have only ever used a Navman in a hire car before, so GPS software is all new to me.

What is the difference between mounting on / under the dash? Faster aquisition of the satellites, better signal strength in general, or both?

Didn't confirm re GPS antenna and remote, just impulse bought, but if you look at this picture from the Aussie Ebay seller it would appear to me as though it comes with the antenna, and no remote. Also looks like the CANBUS interface is built into the unit, unlike the AVC9000. As you say, installation should be a piece of piss - I'm not interested in the reversing camera or TV antenna (especially after seeing what a waste of time the TV reception was when we were installing Steve's).

The only other problem that I forsee is the active/passive antenna setup in the golf. I have an account with an electronic components wholesaler (who supply Jaycar, Altronics, etc), they stock aerpro products along with all kinds of generic chinese brands, so I'll have to investigate if they have something suitable. Otherwise there's always Morley HiFi or Alberts.
